Hello,

Could someone please tell me the value of a 40 cal. Harper's Ferry purcussion rifle? There is an Eagle,1812 & US printed on a plate that is mounted on the gun. The serial/model # is CP12557, the total legnth of the gun from stock to barrel is 4'1/2", the single barrel is 3'4" with a ramrod. The gun is very good condition.
This is my senior neighbor who is interested in the value and possibly selling. Any information on the gun would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Traci

Pictures are a must to even have an Idea 40 Caliber does not sound correct for this vintage gun.

Like Perry Shooter said....The discription don't fit the Gun.....Harpers Ferry was a United States Arsenal....They made Muskets and Military Pistols in larger caliber than .40....Post some photos....and lets us have a look....Its possible that You have a Confederate made gun.....Just not enough information to go on.......

Harpers Ferry muskets were never marked with any serial numbering. Model 1795 barrels were between 42" & 45", and .69 caliber. A model 1803 could bear an 1812 date, but the barrel length would be between 33" & 36", and .54 caliber. All would have been flintlock.

I would suspect that the presence of a serial number indicates a reproduction. As stated, pictures are needed.

Army surplus lock on a hunting rifle, I figure. Probably a repro, there weren't many alphanumeric serial numbers in those days.
