Blackgum rifle stocks

Not long ago I was reading a book, Knowing your Trees, by Collingwood & Brush, 1974. On page 339 they discuss Blackgum trees, Nyssa sylvatica, and this statement appears ... "Because of its toughness it is used for... gunstocks and pistol grips." Is this statement really true? If so has anybody ever seen one? It seems to me that it would be difficult to machine because of its irregular grain.
