Marlin 336 w/ banded forearm

I'm looking at some photos of Marlin Lever 30-30.

One is supposed to be a model 336 and the other a 30AS.
The pics show the 336 with a band around the forearm and bbl., no band on the other (30AS).

My memory of a 336 I had MANY years ago had no band on the forearm.

Is the band a model specific deal ? (I've not found the answer on the Marlin page and a couple of Lever-nut-pages.)

If I understand the scuttle correctly, the 30AS is a 'cheaper' version of the 336. Is this so ?
(Why flack-up a good gun for a few bucks - - thanks a lot Marlin)

Anybody Know ? I would appreciate it.

336 and 30 both must have bands. Rear one holds the forearm on and the front one holds the magazine tube. Both would fall out without the bands.

All 336 rifles DO NOT have bands.
Some do, some models do not.
The 336xlr, 336cb, model 39 336, 336A have no barrel bands whatsoever. The forestock is held in place by a metal cap that slides down over the mag tube and is held in place by two screws. The mag tube is held in place by an insert in a dovetail joint on the barrel.
Also, among the banded types, some 336 models have one barrel band, others have two.

The bands ARE specific to certain models.

As far as I know, there are some more basic models of 336, and therefore they cost less. But, the frame and barrels are the same. Less quality wood and easier construction methods (barrel bands vice dovetails require much less machining and inletting to the wood) makes for a less expensive rifle.

My 1970 336 30-30 has only one band near the front of the forearm. I'll be sure to hold toward the rear when I shoot from now on..... LOL [;)]

    Check out the Marlin website,

    http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/

Shows the major different models. Hope the mag tube and forarm don't fall off all those without bands! ;)
