to go from 458 r\m to 458 lott is it just a matter of having the barrel reamed to 458 lott in a rem 700 af

    bob the nailer,

Yes, that's correct. The best part of the process is that you can continue to shoot the original .458 Win. Mag. as well as the .458 Lott.

The Lott is a terrific cartridge but can be a little intimidating recoil-wise.

    Best.

many thanks , bullet jump ?? any probs , and i suppose the only way to get around that would be a brake ..recoil wise that is
,, would the lott be as bad as a 416 rem ??
    cheers

    bob the nailer,

Yes there will be some bullet jump. It's unavoidable but it doesn't seem to be seriously detrimental to Dangerous Game accuracy.

Is the recoil as bad as the .416 Rem.? Not in my opinion unless you're just not prepared for it. You can start with some mild loads and work up to the full house loads as you build time with the rifle.

Recoil can be dealt with in a couple of different ways:

Do NOT shoot sitting down from a bench, shoot standing up with a standing rest.

You can add a muzzle brake of course.

Increase the weight of the rifle.

Additional weight added with recoil reducers added to the stock.

But I think the best way is with an appropriate stock, designed to defeat recoil.

You can also use a Past recoil shield and have a Limb Saver pad put on the stock.

    Best.

Hello please don't take this the wrong way but what do you perceive as the shortcomings of the 458 win-mag that would be worth the reduction of value in rechambering a factory built rifle. and the increase in recoil another part of your original question. I would think the 458 would be enough for anything walking on 2 or 4 legs on earth.

I have a Ruger #1 & a CZ 550 in 458 Win. The only thing I've killed with it is my left shoulder & some paper targets.

Really, 458 Win recoil is not that bad - using 300 to 350 grain bullets it's pretty civil and the round is very accurate, a fact often overlooked. But 40 rounds or so of 500 grain bullets does take its toll. The recoil is a very heavy, big push and it does move you around.

The 458 Win should stop anything on the planet. I don't plan on using it in Africa, I bought the 458s just because I wanted them. I guess that's good enough reason for me and suppose it's good enough to go to the Lott.

I fired ( 1 ) .458 Win round from a #1, Never again. I quickly came to the conclusion, that the 6.5 Swede was way more my cup of tea.

I'm not too far behind you on that - the 6.5 Swede is my favorite "don't have one yet" cartridge. I suspect a full stocked 550 will find its way to me soon.
