Best Rifle for Home Defense

I am looking for a good home defense rifle (not shotgun and not pistol). Right now, I am in a densely packed neighborhood in California. So I am compelled to be mindful of caliber, etc.

I have my eye on a Winchester Model 94 in 30/30 with a 16 inch barrel. Are there better choices? I don't care for the M4 or other black rifles. I'm appreciate the classic rifle look.

Thanks, Tom

    Welcome to the forum.

The rifle you mention seems like like a good choice to me. Be prepared for the warnings about "shooting through walls and hitting innocent child".

Utilizing a rifle in a densely packed neighborhood is just asking for trouble, but if you insist the Ruger 10-22 would work.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

Winchester 94 44 mag or 357 mag or Rossi model 92 in the pistol cal. and use shot shells. The 30/30 could got through several walls. Not good.

Ruger makes a 9mm and .40 carbine. Marlin used to make the Camp 9 and Camp .45

You planning to shoot the baby two houses down as well as the intruder? Sorry, I do not get a rifle as a home defense firearm.

OK. I feel the heat from the flames. What would you suggest?

I would say something in a 30cal. But your nuts for having a rifle as home defense. Number the issue of going through your neighbors house is a problem. Number two a hunting rifle is not good in close quarters.

If you insist on the rifle, get a caliber that you can purchase GLaser Safety Slugs for. They even come for 223 and 308 as well as handgun calibers. The shotgun is your best bet loaded with #2 birdshot; no one has enough fingers to plug all those holes! RJSnow

    TS,

I love all my pistol cal levers, from the 22's, 357s, 44s, 45 Colt, and a few 30-30's...that being said, I wouldn't use any of them for home defense.

Save yourself the hassle and just go to a pawn shop and pick up an old 12ga pump for about $100-$150...bird shot does amazing things up close and personal.

Ronald, you beat me by 30 sec's[:D]

An M1 carbine or Hi point carbine or marlin 9mm carbine would be good choices...... in other words, pistol caliber, short barrel...

I'll still take my double barrel 12 ga. cylinder bore. 1 loaded with OO buck, one loaded with 4 shot. Faster than even a semi auto on the second shot, and if I can't take them out with 2 shots from a shotgun..there are probably more than 2 there anyhow and one would get me in the meantime.

[8D]--I'm in Cal. and it don't matter--

-If you're in a cabin or dense pop. a 12 ga Mossberg pump shotgun--

without training ----the best #6 shot shells--
