VFW Garand - BAD blank cartridges ?

Last week I asked for help in this forum on the care of ceremonial M1 Garands. I received helpful links and tips. After cleaning and lubeing one of the rifles as suggested I went to test fire it and had two misfires in six rounds. Both times the spent cartridge ejected but it did not feed another round. These blank cartridges are the older style with rolled crimp and the red plug. Inspecting the six spent cartridges I found that 3 of them were opened up straight out as if a bullet had been fired, the other 3 are still rolled over like they were before being fired. I figured that one of rolled crimp ones was the last round and wouldn't have fed another round if there had been one. I have borrowed some of the newer crimped style and will test them soon. Should all the spent cartridges be fire formed to the chamber shape ?

Thanks Again Dave

Tom Whitten, coordinator of the loan program for CMP, has issued specific instructions for malfunctioning rifles: If they don't work right after thorough cleaning, return them & they will be replaced.

please note also that all blanks should be fired "muzzel up". you may get incompleat ingnition if fired horizontaly. at least the .30/06 blanks we are talking about here.

I do not imagine that a blank will fire form as will a round with a projectile.

Update on misfires. tested some new crimped style 30-06 blanks in a rifle that had about 12 rounds (2 misfires) fired sense the last cleaning, no misfires. Loaded 7 rifles with the crimped blanks for a funeral yesterday and they all fired. I can't wait for my new supply of cartridges to arrive.

    Thanks for the replys Dave
