Winchester "Wintuff" Model 94AE 30-30

I picked up a Winchester "Wintuff" 94AE 30-30 recently. Nice little rifle for fun. It's brand new, unfired, and from the serial number (5485192) I think it was manufactured in 1985.

Anyway, I thought all of the model 94's prior to the cross bolt safety had either a tang safety, or the "half-cock" safety. This rifle appears to have no safety at all, and there is A LOT of play in the trigger when it's cocked. I think there is something wrong, and would appreciate comments from anyone who knows these rifles better than I do.

Thanks.

Mark A.

Actually, the tang safety came along even later than the cross bolt safety. Probably what you have is a rebounding hammer. That means there is a spring that keeps the hammer away from the firing after it is fired and only goes all the way down from the pressure of the mainspring. I think it should still have the half cock safety but maybe not. I'd have to see it to be sure. I don't have either one of my 94's in front of me to check the play in the trigger but that could be normal.

Thanks Bode. That sounds right. I remember about this now that you mention it, but I never had one till now. Not too sure I like it very much. I bought this for my nephew, and I just wanted to make sure it wasn't defective before I give it to him. There's at least 1/2" of spring play in the trigger before it engages, but I guess that's normal also. Thanks again.
