shipping antique firearms

Hi I just got back from the UPS shipping center. I tried to ship an 1866 winchester rifle and a 1858 new model remington 44 blackpowder revolver.(the original not a copy) These guns are both antiques.
They said up there, that first, I could not ship the rifle because I was not a dealer and they said the revolver would have to be shipped next day air because it is a handgun. I explained to them that both of these firearms are ANTIQUES and the pistol is cap and ball! Arn't I correct in stating that these should be able to be shipped and recieved with no license required on either party. Please advise as to what the rules are. Thanks in advance and have a great night.

    most clerks are morons
cap and ball is not a firearm
ups policy is centers only knowlingly take firearms from individials
    , not the little stores.
Not advising you, but I usually just answer "machined parts" when they ask me contents. techicnally correct but didn't tell them is was a weapon, and I dont have to deal with the policies and shocked clerks

I have a civil war era collection. My 9 y.o. grand-daughter could have legally paid for & had them shipped to her. Next day air = more bucks! Don't blame just UPS. The whole shipping industry just wants to cover their a**. Never mind about the laws.
It's too late for me, save yourself.

Like the others said, mail it as parts. I deliver for UPS and I see this ignorance first hand. 99% of these clowns have no idea what a cap and ball is.[xx(] If you want to insure it for more than the standard and "free" $100, tell them your shipping parts from a rare car. The only time you will have to make a claim(if packed well) is if it is lost, and then there is no proof to what actually was shipped.

    UPS SUCKS!!!!!

I WILL NOT PAY EXTRA BECAUSE THEIR EMPLOYEES STEAL AND THEY DON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH IT!

SHIP UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE AND BE DONE WITH IT.

IF IT'S BROWN, FLUSH IT DOWN.

Nunn & others are right about UPS. Their people follow the time "honored" custom of 'do nothing and you make no mistakes'. It is even more frustrating when they start quoting you "regulations" which don't exist or don't apply. I usually use registered mail or priority mail. The PO people are not allowed to ask the contents - and before '98 guns are legal. Registered has special packaging requirements and Priority costs more when you have to pay one percent insurance cost on an expensive piece. Fortunately I do some work for the local gunshop and they will handle UPS shipments when the client insists on UPS. Hope this helps.

Here it is again..This comes up every month or so.

DO NOT GIVE IN!!!! The PO is violating your rights. If people keep letting it go and running to UPS to pay $60.00 for shipping a gun, it will only get worse.

Do some research. Print out some laws and regs. Then go back to the PO and stick it in the clerks...face.

I had the same problem, I looked up the rules, and I fixed it. I don't have any more trouble with snotty nosed little Hitlers in my local PO.

Here are some places to start:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_Control_Act_of_1968

    http://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_003.html#NL508_15

    http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_03/27cfrv1_03.html

Nunn, maybe this list could be put in a "sticky" for a while. I hate to keep seeing people give advice to "Give up and take it to UPS, or lie about what's in the package." That is not only a disservice to us all, but if you call it "car parts," what do you do when it's lost or damaged and you want to collect insurance on it?
