Does anyone know where I can buy a set of steel numbers about 3/32" high? I have a Colt 1855 revolving rifle the numbers on the trigger guard strap have been buffed away. I need to replace them with the original number that is on the frame. Any info appreciated.

    rhmc24,

Number punch sets can be purchased from MSC, Rutland and probably Harbor Freight.

Is this a collectible firearm or a reproduction? I personally wouldn't use number or letter punches on any firearm.

I suggest that you find a good engraver to have those number put back in place. The quality of the final result will be well worth the effort of locating a good engraver. Numbers and letters aren't that expensive to have done.

    Best.

I agree with no nonsense. YOU would need the right type"FONT" as well as size . My suggestion is don't mess with it done incorrectly would hurt the value more then leaving the numbers buffed out.[:p][:p]EDIT yes I should have looked at your profile. [:I]I have 9 different sizes and styles of number stamps some close to 100 years old . However NONE of mine are small as the ones found on most firearms[:(]A stamp does look different under a glass as it puts a small thin crater on the edge of the indentation.I have looked at some of Doug Turnbull's stuff and he must have some stamps for Winchester but the few colts I have looked at were either refinished original or engraved because this thin edge was missing. I don't think you could ever refinish without removing this edge.

Thanks, yes I'm looking for the 'right font'. Actually there is someone who makes repro Colt numbers and would like to find him. I am a good engraver and have engraved names and numbers on guns before but it is tedious and never suits me. One I did on my restoration of a family gun, a Remington Model 12 .22 rifle, nobody ever questioned. I may be too picky. See my profile. Thanks,
