Does anyone know anything about 7.62x59 ammo? I bought a case of what I was told was 7.62x54 and ended up with 7.62x59. I bought this from J and G at the Phx gun show. I just found out last night when my son got home on leave and was wanting to do some shooting while home, so I cannot get any information from J&G until Monday! So if you can help, I am most greatful! My direct email is:doprisa@aol.com

If you can give us all the markings on the boxes the ammo come in, and the headstamps on the ammo, it can be identified.

That said, the ammo is PROBABLY 7.62 x 51 rather then 7.62 x 59. The 7.62 x 51 is commonly encountered military ammo used M 1A's, FALS, CETMES and many bolt action military rifles.

    Hi,

Are you sure it isn't 7.62x51 instead of 7.62x59??? I am not familiar with any 7.62x59 ammunition. The 30-06 in metric units is 7.62x63.

If it is 7.62x51 it is 7.62 Nato or 308 Winchester.

    Regards,

I would bet a lot of money that it IS 7.62X54R. A lot of this was improperly labeled when it came in and I'd wager that's what you have. If you want to double check, just take a ruler graduated in centimeters and measure the length of the brass; it should be 54mm from base to neck.

or do you mean 7.62 * 39, the other soviet std for aks and sks
I bet so, considering the price of 7.62 * 51

    7.62x39 (for SKS & AK47 type weapons)
    7.62x51
7.62x53R/7.62x54R (for Mosin Nagant type rifles)
    7.62x63 (30-06)
    7.7x58 (Japanese Arasaka rifle)
    7.92x57 (8mm Mauser)
8x50R (for the earlier M-95 straight pull Austro-Hungarian rifles)
8x56R (for the later M-95 straight pull Austro-Hungarian rifles)

Measure the length of the case (inches or mm).
Does it have a rim, or is it a rimless design?
Try to get a accurate measurement of the bullets diameter, where it meets the case mouth (inches or mm).

    doprisa,

    Welcome to the GB forums!

Another thought is the .30-40 Krag which measures 7.62 x 59 and it is rimmed. It's unusual to see it referred to by that designation but it's just some more information to consider for discussion. Check the packaging and the headstamp as recommended above and let's see if we can't figure this one out.

    Best.
