Model 70 rebarreling.

I was thinking of having one of my Winchester model 70 featherweight .30-06 rifles rebarreled to a .280 caliber barrel. Would I have to do anything else to the action or anything else, or just have the barrels changed?

    Turbo72,

Change barrels: GTG! You may want to think about getting a .280AI though as long as you are changing barrels. You will get a lot of performance out of a .280AI. I push 180 VLD's out at 2610 from mine. That doesn't seem like monstrous velocity but when you consider how good the ballistics are on the 180 Berger...you will understand.

Mine is a Shilen 1-9" twist that I had put on a custom Mauser. A local gunsmith did the barrel chambering, crowning etc. You can order Shilen barrels from him or MidwayUSA or Brownells or many other on-line catalog sites. If you plan to shoot heavy for caliber bullets plan on getting a tighter twist barrel. If I had to do it again I would have found a 1-8" twist. Pac-nor is another good barrel source. they have standard 1-8" .284 blanks. I say too, get the stainless as they wear a little better than 4130 chrome-moly barrels. Along those lines there are several top barrel makers. Hart, Krieger, Broughton and Lilja are a few more. Some more people will come by and recommend more good barrel makers as well. Sometimes it isn't just the quality associated with the name, as most do an outstanding job. It's when they have the time to get the barrel done and to you. Good names have been backed up for a while.

    Edit:

Sorry for not saying it. That was part of the etc. mentioned earlier in the post. Everything you can do to make it more accurate while you have it apart is worth it. Honing feedrails, knocking down casting marks that will catch, anything else you just see that needs cleaning or trimming.

Where did you get your barrel and what did it cost for the barrel and having the barrels changed?quote]Originally posted by sandwarrior

I'd spend the extra to have the action face squared and the luggs lapped while the barrel is off. This should lend some more accuracy and better consistency and you are paying the labor to have the barrel removed already.

    turbo72,

I bought this barrel I think through Midway on sale for $149.00?? Don't quote me as it has been a while since I bought it. I've also found them in years past on fleabay(before the ban...they don't get any business from me anymore) and here. In fact I bought two Shilens from AK in .25 cal off GB, $150 each. New blanks in the white. I also have a Sako 7mm contoured for 7 Rem Mag waiting for my dad to let me have his Rem 700 so I can stick a 7mm-08 barrel on it $90. My favorite was the Lilja 7mm I got for $80 bucks shipped to my door that made my 7x57 Mauser. It's a same hole barrel. Just keep shopping around and you will run into some good deals.
