Unertl?

HI, I just picked up a gun with an Unertl scope on it. I think it's an Ultra Varmint model. It has the calibrated head. I can't seem to get the head to adjust. What part turns, the very end of the scope or band about 4 inches back with the numbers 0-9 on it. Also is their any locking set screws I might be missing. I just want to make sure I'm trying to turn the right thinks before I start to put to much force into it, or their isn't a set screw that needs to be loosened. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, is their any web sites that have information on these scopes, Or anybody here. I bought a gun today and it had an Unertl scope on it. The guy had the original wooden box and paper work for it. On the end of the box in marker it's reads 15x ultra 2" obj. 59933 w/tgt.mounts and bases. Question is ultra the model, what years was it made and how much is it worth. It's in very good to excellent condition.

    Thanks
    Glenn

You're smart to proceed with caution. You have a really fine, and valuable scope. It's not uncommon for the grease to dry out and harden after many years. If you plan to use the scope a lot, you may want to send it to a pro for a complete cleaning. No set screws I know of that would affect the parallax or power rings. For the moment I'd say that if you can't turn it using just your two bare hands, then leave it to a pro.

Unertl scopes have a lock ring on top of the calibrated ring. did you back this off? If so and the calibrated ring still wont turn the grease has hardened. Try a little bit of Kroil with the scope standing on end. And I do mean a "little". If this dont work send it to a pro for a cleaning.

-If you don't know anything about working on scopes, i suggest you don't do anything to the scope, including putting any oils or solvents on it. Don't do nothin'!. You have a nice scope, which you don't want to *.

Contact Unertl either by phone or on the web and arrange to send the scope in for a clean-up and physical exam. That's the best way to go and a sound investment in my opinion.

OK guys, I'm assuming the second ring back is the locking ring. Since the first one has the numbers 0-9 on it. I can't get it to move!!! If it's hardened grease, would a little heat from like a blow dryer loosen it up?

    THANKS

I don't see that a little warmth could hurt. Good idea. Definately, though, MOST definately, no solvent, lubes, etc.
If warm air and a firm hand don't do it, "off to the pro's".

    Here is what I suggest!

    quote:REPAIR SERVICES
Unertl Provides Complete parts availability and service for all of its products in the unlikely event any are required.

However, given that Unertl has made scopes for over 70 years, the ability to repair older scopes and the availability of some parts may be limited.

The end or furthest ring from the eyeptece should be either a sun shade or a lock ring. In any event it should unscrew from the second ring.
You could wrap each ring with masking tape to enable you to get a good grip on each while you exert maximum force to unscrew the end
ring. Force used should be between the rings and not involve the scope body.
    Don't use tools.
Scopes use compound lenses made by gluing two or three lenses together. If you use heat and it fries the bond of the objective lens set, the lens is hi$$tory.

Don't force anything to break the lockring loose. These people do a fine job on vintage scopes..
You might consider having it gone thru and cleaned.

IF the scope has any integrity at all,..a bit of heat or some kroil, or even putting it in the freezer won't/shouldn't hurt it. If it leaks under these conditions,..it was in need of repair anyway,..and SHOULD be covered under warranty by Unertl

The older unertl's as your Ultra Varmint, used to be repaired in Mars Pa. I live about 20 miles from there. The repairman was "Chuck", and has since retired with health issues. If the scopes parallax ring and lock ring, are that hard to move, take the advice of rcrosby, wolf, jtmarine, select-fire. I sort of collcet Unertl's, and parts are harder and harder to find. Don't break anything. A pro is the way to go. 15 power ultra varmints are bringing around $750-850 around here. I don't know about other areas, a good cleaning from a pro, is worth every penny. Just my 2 cts.
