Hey Gang, brand new here.

First I'm looking for a 22-250. A buddy of mine is selling a savage 112 before the accutrigger system.

Its stainless bull barrel fluted, with a matte receiver, synthetic stock. Serial Number F586266

It looks extremely similar to the 12fvss.

It's in good shape and he's claiming 1/4" groups at 100 yards. I picked up the rifle last nite and plan on heading to the range on sunday. I'm hoping to get some pics of her tomorrow nite. Going sledding in the mts all day. Yup winter is here already.

It also has a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40mm mounted on her.

He's asking 500 for her. Do ya think it's worth it? Or is there a better deal out there?

considering the optics you are getting i think it is a good deal. you can always install a basic trigger for under 100.00. while they are not as fancy as a remmy a savage is a pretty accurate rifle. good luck.

Welcome to the forum. I don't know what you paid but you probably got a good deal. I have to agree with godalejr.

That is a VERY good deal.

Get in touch with Jim at Northland Shooting Supply, he can set you up with a NICE trigger for a very reasonable price.

    Guys,

This is a friend. I havent paid anything yet. It's an older rifle. So really I'm trying to find it's value.

I know nothing about the accutrigger really and this triggerhas definatly been worked on.

I'm really trying to figure out what model 112 it is, possibly how old, and it's value at this point. Gonna shoot tomorrow after work.

Oh btw, sledding in the mts today, bright blue skys, waste deep snow, fun fun fun! Was running late this morning, forgot the camera, so no pics this time. -5 at the truck, almost 30 above on top where we rode.......

The 2003 edition (24) Blue Book of Gun Values
    112 FVSS Long Range 22-250 disc 1998 alloy receiver, 26 in. fluted ss bbl, 4 shot mag, black synthetic pillar beded stock, w/o sights Mfg 1993 - 2002. 100% $495, 98% 425, 95% 360
I'd gladly pay $500 for a rifle that shoots 1/4 in groups at 100 yards. The "Varminter" is one of my favorite.

    AKDan,

    Welcome to the forum.

The rifle may be up to ten years old. I believe they started making them in about 1997. They are incredibly accurate rifles. However, I think 500 is a little steep. The Prostaff is a bottom of the line Nikon. New, the rifle you are looking at was $619.00 MSRP. Depending on what the barrel is like you may be losing money. The first thing I would do is evaluate the barrel. At best,IMO, it's going to be a $400.00 rifle by itself. Add half the scope cost and you have $450.00 total, tops. If the bore is degraded I would subtract from there. You may probably go as low as $250 depending on bore erosion. Not to treat a friend wrong but .22-250's are good at wearing out bores. You then need to replace barrels. The good thing is with a Savage is you can get a good pre-fitted barrel and put it on yourself. If you have a mechanical talent.

Specifically, on the Accutrigger. It is kind of a safety if you will. It has to be pulled before the trigger will release. It's a good thing but not completely necessary. Pre-Accutriggers can be adjusted the same way, right down to ounces. They will only adjust down to 1-1/2 or 2 lbs before the safety won't engage but you can decide how light you still want to go. I set mine right at minimum safety engagement.

    so this is a fvss?

The barrel problems was a concern I need to address. My plan is to take it to a local gunsmith and have him appraise it for me. There is only one now in town worth a beans and he can be kinda crabby depending on what you ask him to do. So I'm trying to do my own research to get an idear before hand what is high and low and what to expect so there is no suprise on either end.

I havent confirmed or otherwise the 1/4" groups, that is just what he claimed. And I knew the price seemed a little steep too, that's the main reason of concern.

Lots of questions, hopefully I can get the answers to the riddle.

    AKDan,

$500 may not be all that steep. Maybe fifty bucks off the top of the good end. I'm just saying if the barrel is worn deduct that. A replacement barrel may run up to a couple hundred bucks. You may decide you are better off buying a new rifle. I would certainly steer you towards a new Savage if I was selling rifles in general. They aren't expensive compared to other rifles and they do shoot better than most. Better as in my .223 still shoots same hole with over 1800 rounds through it. If you just look at the first few inches of the bore you will see what I mean. New or in good condition is going to have the lands starting up from the leade or throat as very distinguishable. If the rifle has been shot a lot or shot a lot, hot, it will have the lands as showing rounded. Depending on how smooth they are is how much barrel life you have left. A 22-250 can last a long time if the barrel is taken care of. They can be shot out rather quickly if not accounted for.

When you say Lands, I take it you are meaning the outside corner of the rifling?

If that is the case it did look like on the muzzle end that the grooves weren't as sharp as farther down the barrel by eyeballing it.

I didnt get to the range before dark, just walked into the house.

I dunno about cheap but the rifle I'd LIKE to have is a cool 1k brand new, to dang much for me, but then again I may last my lifetime with as few of dogs we have around here.
