Goose Hunt

I'm going on a goose hunt in a couple of weeks and this will be my first time. I have a Remington 870 express super mag that I'll be bringing to hunt with. So I have to capability to shoot 2 3/4" - 3 1/2" shells.

What do you guys recommend? Shell length, shot size, particular brands of factory ammo? Just not familiar with hunting geese.

Also what choke will pattern best using a "goose load"?

Thanks!!

I like full choke #2's or #4's Remington "heavy shot"
Seems to "peel them right down"!!
    Good luck,

Depends on if you are shooting over decoys or pass shooting.

I/C or mod choke. 2's heavy shot. BB's steel. Where are you going to hunt?? Have a save trip. We had a BIG goose shoot last Thursday. Big canadas. Eastern Nebraska.

Gearheaddad's suggestion is what I've always shot, with the exception of a mod choke with steel or BB at times. As far as 2 3/4 and 3 1/2 loads...go with your own preference. We have some younguns at our place that shoot 10ga. Us older shoulders stay away from them and still knock down birds with 2 3/4 inch shells.

When the weather and birds are right, it seems to make no difference....everybody gets birds. I'm sure there is an edge there, it just doesn't show up much from the blinds.

We hunt in coastal LA, by then all the birds are wary. Unless you have a good spread and it is rainy and overcast, just stay at the camp.

I will side with duckhunter on this one as far as shot size and say that if you are hunting over decoys then load up with the first two rounds being 2-3/4" and the last round with a 3" shell.

Be sure to check local laws. A lot of states require that you only use steel for water fowl. If that is the case, 3", Mod, BB is a common set up in these here parts. Good Luck

The 3" #2 heavy shot is devastating over decoys on both ducks and geese. I've haven't seen birds go down that hard sense the days of lead shot.

3" #2's or better thru a modified choke. Shoot'em in the eyeball. Those 3 1/2's are punishing, and I'm not usually recoil shy. They just seem to give me a headache everytime I shoot'em.

Try the Blackcloud ammo, it is devestating.
