What happened to my BAR?

A week ago I fired 3 or 4 rounds to make sure my scope was still in adjustment. No apparent problems. Yesterday I finally got to go hunting. Everthing went fine I a good opportunity and took a shot bagging my first deer of the season. Went I unloaded my rifle to take the deer to the processor the spent cartridge was still in the chamber.

When I got home I removed the forearm and found some plastic looking fragments/chunks. Also there is some black residue all over the inside front of the forearm. So, I think something in the gas system is broken.

The BAR is Belgian manufacture, grade II, chambered in 30-06. I am not sure of the year manufactured but the grade II was only made for a short time. Is this something a novice can address and is there a parts kit availble to change out everything that should be changed? Where would I look for the parts once I identify what I need? Thanks.

EDIT:
Thanks Mike Whiskey and others for the information. I went to Brownells on line catalog. The schematic shows 3 parts that deal with the gas, a gas regulator, a gas regulator gasket and a gas piston. The only nearby spring is something called an action spring which I assume is what you are calling the mainspring. I guess what I am seeing is either part of the gas regulator gasket, gas regulator, gas piston or all of the above.

YOUR 'BUFFER' WENT SOUTH. THE GRADE 2 WAS MADE LATE 1960'S TO THE EARLY 1970'S YOU SHOULD HAVE IT CLEANED WELL AND A NEW RECOIL (MAIN) SPRING INSTALLED.

Mike is correct, the buffer Mike is talking about is on brownells bar schmetic: # 10
part no. B317606501 149-100-065 it is made of plastic and over the years breaks. that is the broken plastic you saw under your forearm. i've had to replace mine in the past. it is sandwiched between 2 buffer plates part number 149-100-65 on the brownells bar schmetic.

Thanks to everyone for the help, especially Mike Whiskey and rsr1950. The spring looks OK (like new) but I will change it as advised also. It looks like I was looking for the problem in the wrong place.

When my semiauto jammed while deer hunting, I got rid of it, and got a Mauser.

if you look at the serial number it will begin with 2 numbers and the letter M the 2 numbers is the year it was made the numbers after the M is the serial number.like sn 68M1000 was made in 1968 m means BAR this only applies to Belgum BAR'S made before 1976 serial numbers changed when they started assembly in Portugal.
