C.A.I. Georgia VT. who are they?

I picked up a S&W model 10-5 4in non heavy barrel version serial 1XXX. Wonderful gun to shoot, very smooth, but not as smooth as my 2 in version.[:D] Any way I was looking it over and below the cylinder on the left side is stamped "C.A.I. Georgia VT." Now I know I've seen this before, I think and there it is again on my SKS and M-1891/30. What, did buy a gun that was sent overseas and brought back? Thank you for any help

    Century International Arms. For their import marks, they are Century Arms International, or CAI, rather than CIA, for obvious reasons.

    Yes, you did buy an American-made Smith & Wesson revolver that was exported, then imported back to the USA, so it required an import mark. Don't let it worry you. My wife has a model 36 so marked, and it is a good gun.

    Known mainly for their importation of military firearms - CETME, FN 49s, FAL. They've been around for about 40 years or so. Some of their guns are decent buys, some are not so good put togethers.

    S&W letter will inform you of the first place it was shipped to on it's outbound trek. That is usually the foreign country's local purchasing agent here in the US. (For military purchases). If it went to the Brits, It'd be stamped all over the revolver with ton limits, proofs. It wasn't used by the British, because it wasn't proofed by them, or you would have mentioned all the [British] stampings in your description. Hope I helped. Joe

    They have had to move several times over the years as various local governments have forced them out for varying reasons. It is interesting to note CAI is run by a lady! Part of me wishes I were her kid! Imagine Christmas in THAT house! Baby Browning stocking stuffers and Venezuelan FN-49's for all! HO! HO! HO!
