I'm looking at a colt double action revolver, six inch barrel. bluing is good, but somewhat worn. On the right side of the barrel is COLTS P T. FA MFG CO HARTFORD CT USA, PATENTED AUG 5, 1884, NOV 6, 88 MAR 5, 95. The left side says COLT D A 38. There is no shroud on the ejector, and on the bottom of the grip is the numbers 1726XX. Can you give me the model number, some back ground and an approximate value? thanks, dave

From your information it appears to be the "New Army and Navy ". Over 290,000 of this model was made between 1892 & 1907.

It would be best if you could post photos, for a accurate appraisal.

Your's was originally chambered for the .38 Long Colt. This cartridge is the predecessor of the .38 Special. Although it's possible to chamber and fire the .38 Special, ( light target loads only ) in your revolver. It would be prudent to take it to a competent Gunsmith for inspection, and test firing, prior to your attempting to fire it.
