Did all the Colt Frontier Scouts .22LR revolver have a serial number? Or were there some manufactured prior the 1968 that were not serial numbered? Had a guy bring one in today with no serial number on it. Now I need to know if its legal or not before I buy it.

Serial number on the frame in front of the cylinder. Small numbers ,hard to read.

I thought that was where they were suppose to be. This one has none. I've checked it with a magnifying glass to be sure.

Told the owner I thought it was suppose to be serial numbered and that I would check it out to see for sure and if it was ok I would buy it. He is suppose to come back tomorrow. If he shows I'll have to advise him that it is an illigal gun because numbers have been removed. I know the guy quite well and he'll turn it over to local PD. He was quite rattled when I told him I thought serial numbers had been removed.

Didn't some of those guns have the s/n on the grip frame as well?

Look hard. Does the gun look like it has been reblued? As you must know, the S/N can be buffed off, leaving the gun smooth and shiny. However, it usually leaves that part of the frame looking like.....uh...looking like somebody buffed off the s/n. How does it look? If you and the owner are feeling adventurous, it's no big deal to raise the s/n.

I have encountered two revolvers that lost their serial numbers due to poor refinishing. I think this happened a lot with imports and re-imports from outfits like Klein's back in the 1950s and 60s.

I have also had one from which the serial number was purposefully removed.

In each case, and they were all Smith & Wessons, I stripped them for parts and destroyed the frame.

perform an acid test if you know how, the S/N will show up, if the S/N is 44010F it was stolen from me in 1965, i bought it Feb. 1959

The serial no. may be raised with an acid process. I used to do this with stolen vehicles. Don't waste a Colt until you check around and maybe find someone who can do this for you. Know any LEOs? Anyone that works in vehicle theft or forensics knows how to do this. The only hard part is getting the item polished enough, about like bluing.
