BSA Sweet 17 Scope

I wasn't planning on it, but I got the chance to purchase a beautiful Ruger 77/17 sporter at a killer price so I grabbed it. Now, I'm shopping for a scope to complete the package. I'll probably use the rifle to shoot short-range prarie dogs in eastern Colorado. Most of my rifles are topped with Leupolds, but a friend suggested the BSA Sweet 17 scope. Since I have no experience with BSA scopes or the Sweet 17, I was wondering if any of you out there have any thoughts on this make or model? Anyone have any suggestions for the perfect scope to complement a prarie-dog-popping Ruger 77/17? Thanks.

Dont buy it the I bought is somewhere in the woods [:(!][:(!]literally I tossed it out. It would not hold zero and the yardage knob what a joke. Spend your money else where.

Wow, that was a very fast negative response. The opinions expressed in the two previous posts certainly don't match what I read in the reviews, but everyday field use is probably a better barometer of performance anyway. I hope others will weigh in. If you're not a fan of the BSA Sweet 17, what scope would you recommend for the Ruger 77/17?

I'd like a variable power scope in at least the 4-12 range. I'd consider 6-18, but that might be overkill for the range of the 17 HMR. I also don't want a scope that's longer than the rifle! As for price range, $200-$250 would be OK. Much more than that and I'd be doubling the price of the whole rifle/scope combo! Don't get me wrong, I want a quality scope and would be willing to pay for it, but how much scope do you need on a 17 HMR? I'm open to all suggestions.

I got a Cheap-O-Special Simmons scope from cheaperthandirt.com and it has held zero for well over 500 rds. on my 10/22. I put it on my AR-15 and it held zero for over 160 rds. I think the total cost with a new set of Leupold rings was still under $65. I have been pretty happy with it so far.

Pentax makes a very good scope,I have one on a Contender 7TC/U rifle. You will find that 17 hmr will reach out further than you were thinking,it is a nice round if wind is light.

I have a Sweet 22 on my Contender Hornet barrel that I like. I do not have any experience with the Sweet 17.

However for you price range you may want to consider a Pentax, Swift or Hawke. Here are some links for you.

I have had really good luck out of my Sweet 17! I must have just gotten lucky though. With the 17 grain V-max it is dead on the money out to about 250yds, gets off a little after that, but what can you expect out of a 17grain bullet. I have had mine for a little more than 3 years and shoot it a minimum of twice a week, more than that in the fall. But I couldn't complain too much if it didn't work all that well or finally crapped out on me cause I only gave $60 for mine and it is the 6x-18x one too, and I must say I have been rough on it. But you know how it goes with cheap scopes, chances of getting a good one are about one in a million!

And you ain't joking about a light wind! I won't even bother with my 17HMR or 17HM2 if there is any wind!
