Has anyone tried cast bullets in the Marlin 336ss 30-30 with the 20 inch micro barrel? How did it work out?

Haven't tried it personally, but a friend did and seems that Marlins with micro groove didn't do so good. Seems that the shallow rifling combined with cast bullets, was stripping the rifling and accuracy was horrible. Probably one with ballard type rifling would work better.

BT99 has it right. The only Marlin's with a micro groove barrel that will shoot lead very well is the 22's.

I have one in 35 Rem. It shoots 2 MOA groups with pretty much any jacketed ammo I have tried.

I just started loading lead in it, first try resulted in a 1.5" 6 shot group at 100 yards. RCBS 35-200FN GC bullet at 1800 FPS

I have been thinking of buying a 336ss but do not like the long 24 inch barrel or the laminated stock, prefer the 20 inch one with the walnut stock. A cousin has a old Marlin maruader (bad spelling)in 30/30 that shoots the lyman 31141 like a house afire maybe he just lucked out? Maybe the 336ss in 35rem would be the better choose?

I have shot cast bullets in either of my Marlin 336's, one a Sporting Carbine 20" bbl. in .30-30, the other a 336ADL 24" bbl. in .35 Rem. Both are older (early '60's), both have Micro-Groove rifling, and both will do a fine job with cast bullets IF the bullet is cast hard, is not driven to jacketed-bullet velocities, and are sized appropriately (I size .001" over slugged groove diameter (.309" and .359" respectively). I also clean the bore very thoroughly to remove all traces of copper fouling when shooting cast, and vice-versa when shooting jacketed, though it is much easier to clean after the cast bullets.
