Is it true that some states will allow a firearm purchaser to not have to complete a form 4473 and submit to the NICS system when purchaseing a firearm from an FFL if that buyer has a valid state CCW?

Seems like I read that somewhere, although I don't think KS or MO does it. Anybcody know?

Hello 4473 is a federal law I don't think you can bypass this form. Some states also have a form almost the same for the states use some states MAY let you bypass their form . In Va. one perk to a CCW is unless you have a CCW you can only buy one pistol a month with this permit you can buy as many as you want[:p]

In Oregon you could use your CCW to bypass the background check although I believe that you still had to fill out the 4473 they just didn't have to call it in. This was done until the Liberals voted and now the CCW has no bearing on gun purchases.

My oldest lives in Iowa now and his ccw permits firearms purchases w/o going through the local sheriff for a purchase permit. Here in MO they finally dropped the old system totally since it is just the same questions.

OK, I believe that is the answer to my question. The federal NICS/4473 though a FFL holder can NEVER be bypassed. But if you have a CCW in a state that requires their own state background check, in some states that can be bypassed.

    Thanks everybody.

    Incorrect.

In AZ, whether for puchase of a long arm or handgun, a valid CWP serves as an exemption from NICS. We havent, for years, had a local clearinghouse for NICS on the state level, and it always was a barely funded federal mandate when there was.

Recently we extended the term of our CWP from 4 years to 5, reduced class length from 16hours to 8 hours, and eliminated fingerprinting after a certain date for renewals. One's fingerprints seldom change, went the logic. We also eliminated the 4 hour renewal class. Renewals simply send in their fee and completed application now, and in a couple weeks their new CWP arrives in the mail.

No CWP will serve as an exemption to the completion of a 4473. Even NFA customers, picking up Title 2 weapons, machineguns, silencers, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs must complete a 4473 when taking possession of a firearm.

There is a spot on the back which has a checkbox in it, which states, "No NICS check was required because the transfer involved only NFA firearms."

Washington State is the same as Az. I can walk in a shop, show my CWP, buy a hand gun and walk out the door, no waiting priod, no NICS. Our CWP is also good for five years. In the county I live in there are no class requirments, just go to the county sherifs office with a Washington state drivers lic. and apply, wait 30 days for notice, go back in and pay $60 and your legal.
    For what it's worth.
