7mm Rem Mag vs. 7mm WSM

I'm tossing coins between a 7mm Rem Mag and 7mm WSM for a Colorado elk rifle. Ballistics seem to be a tossup. The 7mm Rem Mag actions are a bit longer and heavier, but the cartridge has been/will be around forever. I don't hear much about the 7mm WSM. Is it selling? I reload, but don't want to wind up with a dinosaur when it's time to resell it down the road.

I like the 7mm WSM better because it has more velocity.I think it will be around for a long time, did you know it set the UK 1000 yard benchrest. For elk I would suggest the 300 WSM for elk.

    Mtnlover,

For hunting ballistics it's a horse apiece. If you reload I would take the 7WSM. For target shooting I would take the 7WSM. For finding ammo anywhere you go, I would get the 7 Rem Mag.

Pretty much a no brainer. The 7mm Rem Mag WILL be around forever, and most of the WSM's (except the 300 of course) are currently dieing a slow death. If you are going to reoad, then you could just buy 1000 pieces of brass in WSM and do it yourself. Also, if you sell it later, you will likely be moving it with about 700 pieces of virgin brass, so that should make it more attractive. The WSM idea is not a new one...the PPC's, the Rem BR's and a whole host of wildcat/proprietary rounds have used the short fat body idea for eons. Winchester made it more commercially feasible because they are/were putting tons of marketing monies into the project. If you want something different that goes like stink and uses these basic principles, go the Lazzaroni route. A 9.03 Meteor should make a GREAT elk gun, and they are not only fast, but Molto accurate as well!
