Depends on what you want it for. Of course a Dan Wesson 357 with the three different barrel lengths is good for EVERYTHING. The 2" snubby is a great CCW, the 4" for protection or target and the 6" for hunting. They are well-made guns.

A ex boss of mine had a 44 mag. It had serious problems with timing. The 357's I have shot were good shooters. Buy some factory shell and take it for a test drive.

Yup! When you're all excited about something and real happy, your wife looks at you with this smirky smile, and you can hear her talking to herself saying, "Oh God! He acts just like a little boy! Just what we don't need around here is another gun! He could have gotten me something nice, but nooooo."

Then she goes on to say, "Uh huh. Uh huh. That sounds nice. You know, you said you were going to mow the lawn yesterday. Can you do that this afternoon?"

The she wonders why you don't get all excited about neat food processors or some cutesy, dust collecting knick-knack that she just bought and is now taking up the space on the side table where you used to set your cold beer.[:p]

I've had my pistol pack since the mid '70,s. I liked it so well I bought one in 22cal. and a stainless 44mag. They are great in my opinion [:D]

Outstanding revolver the Dan Wesson. I currently have my second one. I would readily wager my life on it, as I once had to do with my first one.

As a cautionary note; should you buy one. When you reinstall the barrel after removal put a dab of anti-seize compound on the threads inside the shroud and Do Not overtighten the barrel nut. Of all the folks I know who do/have owned one, a seized barrel nut is the only complaint I have heard.

Three different entities made D W revolvers, over a period of at least 30 years. The early ones made when Wesson was still alive, have the best rep. I would be sure to test fire the one that is being offered to you, to make sure it's functional and reliable. You don't want to get stuck with one of the bottom of the barrel guns that were being blown out, when they were going belly up. My 2?.

If it was made at Monson,MA, it's a good one. I have a .357 VH Pistol Pac, never been fired, I picked up 3yrs ago for $500! I was walking on air till the wife said "You spent how much on what?!!!!"
My "shooter" is a Stainless 8" .357 VH. I ordered it and a twin with consecutive serial numbers, one for me and one for a friend. His came in perfect shape, mine looked like it was made from scrap parts. I sent it back to DW with a nasty letter. 3 Days later I had a personal letter back from the CEO explaining he didn't know how it got past QC and how sorry he was that I ended up with it. They destroyed the gun, built a new one with the serial # registered to me, and then fined tuned it. That was in 1982, the bbl has never been off and it still puts em all in the 10 ring.

...rufe quote: The early ones made when Wesson was still alive, have the best rep.

...Roger that. I'm way more familiar with DW semi's than their wheelguns. Ive heard, no first hand experience, that the quality has suffered somewhat after CZ took DW over, not sure why?
...Surely they did not change up the tooling? Maybe QC and lesser quality of internal parts; though they are susposed to still be using some of the best of the best internals,ie; all Wolf springs etc., I know, Wolf springs, can be another arguement for later.

...I have not picked up and cycled the CZ/DW, but I know the tolerances on the original DW's were EXTREMELY tight, a good and bad thing. Tight and smooth is one thing, so tight the rails can gall and wear to the extreme prematurely and the slightest debris can cause any number of malfuntions is another. No biggie w/the original DW's putting a few rounds thru them to "loosen" them up so they functioned really good....except for the ones that had to go back because they would not loosen up before some damage was done. Shooting your gun is what it's all about, yes? [^]

...I liked the original DW semi's though they (and I shot a lot) did take quite a few rounds (w/several types of malfunctions, not the mags either) to "break-in" and loosen up a tad to get the gremlins out, and some (very few) the gremlins just moved in and called the gun home....but then EVERY gun manf. grows a lemon now and then, just some more than others [:D]...not saying ALL the DW's had malfuntions, but a fair share did before "loosing up".

...As for the wheelguns, IF, CZ changed the tried and true DW method that gave the gun a pretty good rep as "something" apparantly changed with their semi's; I wouldn't doubt there may be some problems with their wheelguns. Just be sure and talk with some people that own the CZ/DW's, and have ran several hundred rounds thru them. Some really good guns have "quirks" that iron out w/a little use, or a simple adj. or spring change, small part change, that is common. Some guns are ready to race right out of the box too, just check with some CZ/DW owners that aren't homers or one's that say if it stovepipes once "it's junk"...[;)]
