I am looking to buy a 7600 in 35 Whelen. I'm a flyfishing guide in Brown Bear infested Bristol Bay, AK. I currently carry a Rem 870 with slugs. I found a 7600 35 Whelen with a 22 inch barrel. Can I have that cut down to 18.5 inches without significant loss of performance?

I have a 742 (semi-auto) cutdown to 18.5" and it shoots just fine. You can do the same with a 7600, just make sure the gunsmith cuts it flush and recrowns the barrel.
Expect a GOOD amount of muzzle flash and noise with the short barrel. Of course if a bear is chargin' you, you probably won't notice.[:D]
If you reload, try a "faster" burning powder such as 3031.

I found Ball C2 to work best in my whelen. 200 gr barnes X at 2975 fps. I didn't believe tha first chono, so the second one varified the veloscity. Must have been a fast barrel.

Great info on barrel length etc.you guys. I picked up the new Rem 7600 in 35 Whelen, as I said in my initial post. I also own another 35 Whelen on a Mauser action. I don't have access to my reloading equipment which is at our homestead in AK and I want to test the gun on a range of factory ammo while in WA state. My question is: can the new Remington pump handle the pressure of Nosler Custom ammo? And what overall concerns should I have about pressure in the pump gun? I don't have access to my reloading equipment in AK and I want to test the gun on a range of factory ammo while in WA state.

Shoot the cheap ammo in the 7600 (if there is such a thing for the Whelen). Expect 1 1/2" groups with the 22" bbl and 2" with the short bbl at 100. If it shoots better than that, you got a "good" one.
I wouldn't feed it a steady diet of higher pressure ammo. It's a strong action, but not Mauser strong.
Did ya get the Carbine or the long barrel?
