My frined showed me a Stevens model 325 last night...no suffix that I can recall...and I see that they came in three variations..a,b, and c.
It's a bolt action 30-30 with a 'spoon' type bolt.
.can anyone tell me the differences in the 3 variations.?
His had a detachable mag. All that I"ve found online have that feature so far.

Thanks!

I collect these guns (340's, 342's, 840's and the 325's) and you are lookng at an "A" model. The "B" had checkering as noted and the third was DT'ed for a reciever sight as well as the 4 tap holes on the side for a side mount AND checkering. Some earlier guns were not DT'ed and those could also be "B" models. All in all it's a pretty confusing scenario as there is some major variation in the Savage models that I have noted over the years. My only 30-30 is an early 340 "A" (near 100% condition and all original) that is drilled for the peep, but not the side mount...as I said, there really is no hard and fast rule for the model variations...just more along the lines of general guidelines.

They are nice litle "truck guns". Some are more finely finished than others but the same basic action is across the board. It is not a 98 mauser action, and has it's strength limitations, but handloads using spitzer bullets can be better than levergun loads for sure. Mine seems around "3 open sights at 100 yds. It would be better with a scope. I have a few 222's and 225 Winchester 340's (the later was the 340V model) that shoot the liuights out with old Weaver K8's and K-4's. They are relatively cheap and can be fun to play with, but will never outshine a pre-64 model 70 or such in terms of finish and strength. You will like the little Stevens..nice little gun for the money and one of the few American made guns with a spoon handle bolt as stock.

    Hello all,

I have a Savage 340, chambered in 30-30 WIN. I picked it up on a horse trade at a gun show. It's a nice little gun. It has the side mount scope. I have an old "Plum" scope on it. It has a blond/honey finish and as a previous poster said...it makes a nice truck gun.

However, the recoil is a bit stiff. Probably due to the light weight and stock configuration. No tack driver but accurate enough.

I have a Revelation 225 which was Western Auto's brand name on the Savage 340. Bought it on gunbroker for the opening bid! one of the most accurate rifles I own and I own some bench rest rifles. [:)]
