Ok, i found a mossberg 500, well, atually its a New Haven 600at
30 inch barel with some special engraved hunting scene on the reciever... anyways the stock and grip were well used, gun is scratched up, but works like a charm!
Picked it up for 100 bucks!
Im going to convert it to a short 'tactial' shotgun wuth a top fold stock, and plastic foregrip, and short barrel.....
What i want to know is why cant i find a longer mag extention for it?
What are some common modifications for this shotgun?
how do you remove the rail on top when cutting the barel down to 20 inches? or do you just cut the rail too?

Now on the 870...Remington made a couple of "dimples in the Mag tube to limit the max. number of shells that can me loaded. (a Dremel tool or dent remover will take care of the problem)

The Mossberg has a special method of mounting the barrel.
There's a knob on the barrel that screws into the end of the magazine tube.
Since the knob assembly is permanently attached to the barrel, there's no way to accommodate a longer magazine tube.
You'd have to buy a new barrel with the knob set near the end of the muzzle, AND buy a longer magazine tube made to work with THAT barrel.
For longer magazine tubes, order direct from Mossberg OR here:
http://www.brownells.com (Click on the Factory Gun Parts tab at the top and look under Mossberg.
Also at Gun Parts Corp:
www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp?chrMasterModel=0840z500
Part number 20.
You'll have to figure out if your gun uses an old style or new style magazine tube.
To be clear, you'll need BOTH a barrel and a magazine tube set up for 8 shot.
To remove the magazine tube, use a plumbers synthetic strap wrench to unscrew the magazine tube.
Grip the tube as close to the receiver as possible. Be careful not to squash the soft aluminum receiver.
Some guns have the tube held in with Loctite.
You may need to warm the area to about 300 degrees to get the Loctite to break down so the tube can be unscrewed.
Note I said WARM......NOT HOT. 300 degrees isn't that hot. Heat it up with a torch and you can easily OVER HEAT it and ruin the gun.
If you're not really SURE you can do all this, see a gunsmith.
You can see the lug on the barrel with the take-down screw would kinda be in the way of a magazine extension. Mossberg barrels (500/600, not 590) come with similar lugs in two different places, one for a five round tube and one for a seven shot. If you don't mind minor gunsmithing and really had a mind to, you could replace the tube and spring along with the barrel to convert your six-shooter to an eight rounder. You'd spend more than you paid for the gun, however.
There are plenty of aftermarket parts and accessories out there, whether or not they actually do anything worthwhile is another story. Not a fan of folding stocks on anything, unless you're packing in a Piper Cub or a Yugo or sumthin where you need every single inch of storage. Hollywood aside, they're extremely difficult to use effectively when folded, and often aren't comfortable or easy to use when deployed.
The only things I unequivocally recommend are getting a fresh magazine spring and a metal safety button instead of the factory plastic one. They tend to break, and while I've shot mine with the button completely broken off and didn't have a problem with it shutting down the gun, I'd rather have a whole one in place.
Ditto on replacing rather than cutting the barrel. I'd keep both of them, so you can switch back and forth when you want.
Here's one on the block:

I got it because looking in the gun mags, all you read about it the 870 and the 500, so i thought it would be a fun project to make one of those 'wild' guns you see in the mags.
I have my personal defense taken care of, and was more wanting to make model, you know. Something to show my buddies when they are over, soemthing just for the 'wow' factor.
But i do admit i want to most modular shotgun, and i think i missed that by 1, the 870! When i get a chance ill post a pic. Maybe this guns too nice to cut up, and maybe someone will trade me out an 'ol plain 870 that will more be what im looking for?!?
Thanks again! and ill keep this updated!
