i posted this question on the reloading forum too. wasnt sure where to go on this one. but anyway a friend told me about this guy that bought this rifle and said it would not feed lead bullets weather they were 225 gr.round ball, rnfp. etc. etc. in the lead. weather the lead was coated or not. but the siver tips or copper jacketed would. is that the way pumas are? are the "henrys" and the marlins" the same? has my curiousity up. i was thinking about buying a 357/38spl or the 454/45LC casull.

My Winchester Lever Gun in 44 mag did not like semi-wadcutters (Kieth 255gr) at the OAL maximum specification. Round nose lead at 180 to 240gr worked OK, but not as 'slick' of a feed as FMJ or Jacketed Soft Points.

I traded the gun before I looked at the problem in detail.

The softer lead nose will catch on 'something' before the harder jacket will.
Find that 'something' , and you have probably found the problem...you may or may not be able to do anything about it.

With my (Marlin) Lever Guns I have found that a 'robust' working of the action is a good practice.

I just gave it a try. The only lead bullets I have are 250 gr round nosed .45 LC.

Most of them fed, some easily, some with great difficulty & a couple
    stovepiped.

I then tried 300 gr .454s & they fed flawlessly. (jacketed with exposed lead flat nosed.)

My 454 Puma would not reliably feed any kind of 45 Colt cartridges. It functioned flawlessly with the 454 rounds.

I don't think it's the bullet. I believe the problem is the case length. For some reason the lifter doesn't usually raise the bullet high enough & you have to give it a couple of jiggles to raise it into possition. Even then the bullet sometimes has difficulty feeding.
Good thing I found this out so that I never try to use .45 LCs when I need reliability.
