Is this a rare round these days? I have been to a few stores Cabels & Bass Pro to name a few and they only have a few. I was wondering why, it is a versitable round and shoots really flat?

The 25-06 looks like a great varmit to deer load. Why don't you see it more?

Any opinions on the 25-06 as a target round? We're talking 100 to 300 yds, paper punching for the most part.

I reload and have all sorts of rifles & calibers - 223s, 6 & 7mm, 30 cal & up - looking at the 25-06 as an all day shooter with a little more power than the 6mm Remington. I handle recoil well, 40 rds through a 375 H & H doesn't hurt, but it's not my idea of an all day target rifle.

I already have a Ruger 77VS and it is fantastically accurate. I see it offered in the 25-06 also.

Any thoughts on the caliber or gun?

I ran across this gun and it's built on a mauser98 action (Belgin)
Mcmillen barrel i think. What would this be worth?

About 8 months ago i purchased a savage 110 in 25-06. It has a heavy barrel 22 inches long. On the bolt it has "Savage tactical" wrote on it. It has BSA 6x24x44 scope with 1/8 inch turret adj. At the time i purchased this rifle (for 300 dollars) i really had no interest in long range shooting, but now i have taken interest. My question is this, Is this a good enough beginer rifle or should i sell it and try to find something better. The rifle may have had no more than 150 rounds of factory loaded ammo run through it.

Well your scope could use a bit of improvement but the rifle is ideal for target work if it is a heavy barreled Savage. The 25.06 is an easy to shoot cartridge with excellent ballistics, but it can be a bit picky on ammo. I have a Ruger Target in 25.06 and a T/C Encore handgun with 15" barrel and it took a bit of reloading work but I'm now getting excellent under 1" groups.

I use the 25.06 (or 6mm Remington) when I don't feel like extended target shooting sessions with 308 or above.

The rifle does have a heavy barrel. Idont have alot of experiance with heavy barrel, are they really that much better. The one i haveseems to be more heavy than most i have seen maybe this is my imagination though. the diameter across the muzzle is 3/4 of an inch.is this pretty much the normal size as far as heavy barrels are concerned?quote:Originally posted by dfletcher

    brickmaster1248,

The rifle you have is outstanding for long range target work. The scope you have on there will accomodate you as you get better and better and move farther out. Once you get pretty good at 500-600 you will start to see you will need better optics. But get there consistently before you go straight out to 1k.

I have a great load that you could work up to in that caliber using Berger 115 gr. VLD's. Using H4831sc(extreme) start with 51 gr. of that behind the 115 Berger loaded .005" into the lands. the reason for loading into the lands is to stabilize the bullet. It has a very heavy nose due to the VLD configuration. You can take this load and work up to 54 gr. But most likely best accuracy will come in the low to middle 53's.

p.s. The jigger, and brickmaster1248, welcome to the forum!

i have the same rifle in an earlier model that has a 24" barrel. on my last prairie dog shoot i had 12 kills at 400+yds with it. it is my go-to for shots over 350yds. your scope leaves something to be desired. use it till it quits and get better glass. i have 5 savage/stevens rifles and all are shooters. i guess i'm saying change scopes not rifles.
    GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can tell you that a 110 is a stout design. I think midwayusa.com has different barrels that you can change yourself. I really perfer 7mm for distance perhaps a 280 Rem. A short light hunting rifle is usually not as accurate as a long heavy target one. Oh and if you really want accuracy load your own.

The thing about a heavy barrel is that it has better capabilities to absorb heat and vibration then a standard hunting contour barrel does. In a target or varmint rifles it is typical to want to shoot strings of shot greater then 5 or 6 at a time. With a standard weight barrel this will cause it to heat up and need to be put aside to cool. The heavy contour barrel can take more shots before needing to cool, it will also take longer to cool down. Heat is the main enemy to barrel life and accuracy. If you shoot them hot and fast you need to expect to have to change them out often. If you shoot them cool and slow a barrel will likely last you a life time. Vibration may be where the heavy really comes into it's own. Stiffer barrels seem to be more accurate. As a bullet travels down the barrel it starts a vibration in the barrel. The repeatablility of that motion contributes to overall accuracy. A stiffer barrel can make this more repeatable, if all other factors are constant, as compared to a standard weith barrel.

I took the rifle this afternoon to see just what i could do with it and with some handloads i got from an experianced reloader friend and shot a less than half inch group at 100 yards. I think i might be hooked!!! The load was 45.5 grains IMR3031 w/100 grain nosler ballistic tip.

Just to verify Brickmaster's story. I am the "experienced" friend(where he got that from I don't know..lol)that sold him that gun and loaded the shells that he shot less than .5in moa today with. I was actually spotting for him. Just like Brickmaster I too am starting to get into this long range shooting stuff. I am looking to purchase a Rifle and everyone around here is telling me that .308 is the way to go(in a Savage 110fb just like the one that Brickmaster has)I was just curious if anyone had any other suggestions.

There are lots of other heavy barreled 308s around - CZ, Remington and Savage, Weatherby, Howa, Browning .....

Since you've already used one: http://www.savagearms.com/12bvss.htm

Mine's in 300 WSM. I'm sure you can find one for less than the list.

Thanks for the Link. What kind of Recoil does your 300 wsm have? I would assume that it is pretty accurate also?
