I recently purchased a Ruger 10/22 and it the instruction manual it stated not to fire 22 Stinger round. The manual showed those round being slightly longer that the standard 22 LR round. So, my question is when the Sting enlongate it casing?

Couldn't extract a stinger from an old single shot 25+ years ago without firing it 'cause the round was too long by a hair. After firing, it was still a hair too long but would come out with some resistance...

So I'd say they've always been a hair longer than a regular 22lr...

That being said, I've put LOTS of them thru a 10/22...

CCI Stingers have always had a slightly longer case, about 1/8", but a slightly shorter bullet that other .22LR ammo.

This makes for a round with an overall length about the same as regular .22 lr ammo. I have fired lots & lots of stingers from my 10-22's with no problems.

About the same time CCI introduced the "Stinger", Winchester introduced the "Xpediter", also a hyper-velocity .22. The Xpediter never sold like the Stingers and went the way of the Beta tapes.

Stingers go about 1640 fps using a 32 gr bullet. I have heard that guns with tighter "match" chambers should not use Stingers, but Ruger 10-22's are NOT made with match chambers.

The problems start when the Stinger rounds are fired in chamber that has a slight bit of errosion just ahead of a regular 22 case. The longer cased Stinger will expand into the corroded area and tend to stick. They pose no problems in newer guns.

Don't try shooting them in a Colt Ace with a floating chamber.

A bit off topic, but hopefully not too far. Interesting to compare ballistics from Stingers and other "standard" high velocity L.R.'s like WW Power Points or CCI HVHP's. Stingers definately pack more whallop up close, but out around 100 yards or so the superior ballistic coefficient of the older rounds make them, in my opinion, better for long range work.

Both myself and each of two my sons have fired thousands of rounds of Stingers in our 10/22's with no problem. Good accuracy and an excellent small game round.

My PT 22 hated them...would make accuracy sux in a handgun...I can shoot them in my 10/22 or my Marlins all day long. Have not shot them in the .22 conversion for the .45 or the Ruger competition target yet so don't know about those..

I shot tons with my ruger semi... and by the way... I read a long time ago that the speed of the cci stingers in the ruger semi pistol were either the same or really close to mag 22 from the revolvers due to cylinder gap, etc. don't know it just read it.. IIRC>
I would not worry about it unless it is sticky for the cartridge brass after firing.. .

I personally like the velocirapter (sp?) better. 40 gr HP going about 1400 fps. Retains the velocity much better and much more accurate than the stingers. Also I never got the stingers to chrono the 1640 fps only would see about 1560 fps.

Its getting off topic, but two points about Stingers:

    1. They get their high velocities by using a combination of a light bullet, and slow burning powder (plus a slightly longer case, as mentioned above).

    2. The slow burning power REQUIRES a longer (rifle) barrel to function.

Putting these rounds in pistols effectively emasculates them. . .the bullet leaves the barrel before the slow burning powder is done burning, leading to a nice flash, but without much of an increase in velocity.

Unlike Stingers, Velocitor rounds use a full standard 40 gr bullet, leading to better energy retention at distance and more momentum at impact (eg better for hunting).

Please read the manual more carefully. It says "DO NOT USE
?_oSTINGER?__ AMMUNITION IN 10/22 TARGET RIFLES"

The warning is NOT for the standard Ruger 10/22, just for the Target model.
