OK, big caliber experts here's the question- 45 acp rounds have a load using 230 gr bullets. I shoot 45 autorim in a big Smith #25. Can I interchange loading data?

You Bet but remember case volume may be slightly different just like military cases VS winchester or federal or remington ETC

The 1917 smith I had shot best with the 250 colt lead. Hard cast and seated out a bit. Wish I still had that jewel.

I had a early 80's vintage M 25 that gave me fits as far as reloading was concerned. It didn't like my standard 1911A1 .45 ACP reloads, ( H & G, 200 grain 68's, over 3.8 grains of BE ). Only shot well with 230 grain jacketed service type bullets.

I didn't know what the problem was at the time? Later found out after I got rid of it. That those vintage M 25's were optomised for standard service ball loads. If you want to shoot lead target type loads, as above. Make sure that the lead bullet is .001 larger the bore dia and is of a fairly hard temper to take the rifling well. My 2?.

The short answer is pretty much yes, no problem. I do note that some reloading manuals list different loads for the ACP - these are usually higher end loads and I presume the higher max load in ACP can be had due to a stronger case construction. My Speer # 1 manual lists some AR cases as having the weaker "balloon head" cases but I'd have to guess those are long gone.

Since Smith 25 owners tend to be a fraternal lot, here's a link to a fellow who offers 225 grain FULL wadcutter for the 45 ACP/AR revolver. They can size from .451 to .455 for you and if you ever wanted to use the 45 revolver for defense, their 270 grain "almost" full wadcutter would be quite the bullet.

I have about a 100 Rem-Umc and Peters 45 auto rim cases in great shape but they have the old baloon primer pockets. Does anyone know if they are safe to use for moderate power target handloads in my Brazilian S&W 1927?

The load data as everyone has already said it interchangeable. Have fun and enjoy the round it is a great one!

Just my 2 cents, but I'd retire the balloon head brass. All else being equal, you should only have a slightly greater case capacity and no problems. That is Old Brass, though, and not as strong as modern, even when it was new. With ACP brass so easy to come by, why risk it?

Re-read the original, and see that the balloon head is A.R. brass. Certainly not as easy to come by as the standard ACP, but I'd still retire it. Use full or half moon clips if you have to.
