H & R Pistol Identification

I found a pistol in 1962, which I believe to be a H & R possibly Model 1 or 4. it was very rusted and a good portion of the markings are very hard to read. It is a S & W .38 cal., 4.5 inch barrel, 5-round. I have not been able to locate any positive pictures of information, which would enable me to date or identify it. Maybe someone knows of a refrence book or such that I could search. Was it a military issue or only a private purchased item?

    SP,
There are no "good" reference sources out there, as yet. However, if you describe your gun, including any inscriptions you can read on the barrel, serial number (check under the left grip panel on the bottom of the grip frame), describe the grip panels, etc. I can probably help you with an ID and era of manufacture. With a 4.5" barrel, I'm assuming it is a solid frame with a pull-pin cylinder and probably an American Double Action variant????? Also, if the caliber/cartridge is listed on the left side of the barrel, it is post 1904 manufacture.
The only known U.S. military issued H&R handguns were a bunch of small, hinged frame "Premiers" bought by the Gov't during WW2 for use by the OSS.
