Winchester mod 74 - not working -

The last time I shot this rifle, 3 or 4 months ago, there were no problems at all.
I go to load this rifle recently to shoot, and the bolt will not cycle a round,
it will only pull back about 1/2".
Also, the safety will not move from off of the Safe position.
The gun is unloaded. Any ideas what could have broken ?
I don't have a dis-assembly manual. Thanks for any help.

I would recommend the services of a good gun smith. Without a reference you would probably end up taking it to the smith sooner or latter[;)]

Very sage advice... and well worth heeding.

You probably should take it to a gunsmith, but I'm pretty sure that is a broken spring inside the bolt disallowing movement to cycle the bolt. Likely have to take it in to get that fixed anyway, as mentioned.

I have a Win 74 and when I disassembled it for a thorough cleaning, I had to pay a gunsmith to put it back together.

Pinkston...Did the same thing with a (friends, no less)Colt preWoodsman....VERY embarrasing! You make an excellent point. Some of these older guns were real wonders of assembly!

Have you solved your problem? If so, what was it?
I think that the detent that positions the safety is just gummed up which in turn won't let the safety move from "on" and, of course, with the safety stuck in the "on" position the bolt can only be moved back about as far as you described. If the gun was working fine when you put it in the closet than I would suspect that someone, unbeknownst to you , was playing with it, broke it somehow, and put it back without saying anything to you or you have poltergeists.[:D]

    Roysha,
It's in the Safe position, so I am waiting for the dis-assembly
instructions from bama55 before I tear her down. I suspect that
there was a cracked part that just happened to break comletely when
I went to cycle the action. That's all I can figure at this time. Thanks for your help.

When you take it down, be careful as some small parts are under preasure and will go flying. Not so hard to find them as to determine how they fit back in.
