Building an AK-47

Looking at buying an ak47 parts kit to build myself. I've been a machinist for over 30+ years, always wanted to gunsmith alittle. What ak47 kits are best, does the reciever need a serial number for personal use, any BATF rules to watch for? Want to stay just inside the right side of the law. Thanks

You can make your own receiver. Although ATF recommends that you ask them to register a serial number of your choice, it is not mandatory.

In all cases, a homemade receiver can never be legally transferred. By that, I mean that it can't pass through the hands of a Federal Firearms Licensee. (However, you can give it a friend or relative if such a transfer is legal where you live.)

Instructions for making an AK receiver are found on www.surplusrifle.com ; hurry, as that website will be closing soon.

    I'm no machinest but I built these 2 Romanian G AK's.
Top one is built on a OOW receiver. Bottom is built on a No Dak Spud NDS-3 receiver. Both are rivet builds.

There are tools out there to bend flats.

I couldn't justify the expense of buying 1 for building 2 guns. And down the line I might sell one of my builds in a shop which you can't do with a flat build. However, I just may break down and buy one later.

Here's a link to a good build site:

I've had real good luck buying kits from Copes Distribution
    http://www.copesdist.com/partskits.htm

The gun built on the NDS-3 receiver above was one of Copes $85 (now $99) off the top of the pile guns. It came all matching. The other kit I bought from a sellor on one of the other forums. It was non matching.

I have since bought 2 more kits that I'm slowly building. A Yugo Kinkov that I'm building as a pistol and a Romanian G that I'm building into a Underfolder. I'm using No Dak Spud receivers for both.
