What should I use for within 200 yds. Need something durable and reliable, that will "take a licking and keep on ticking".

Let me add this. Before you say use open sights, I am blind in one eye and can't shoot out of the other.

I absolutely know what you mean about the eyesight (especially if you are over the hill a bit like me.[:D]

This set-up solved that problem for me in a big way, making sighting accurately and quickly easy:

This forward scope mount that some refer to as a scout set-up is made by a company called "Ranch Products" and is of excellent quality and precise fit. In combination with a long eye relief (handgun or scout) fixed power scope you can get on target lightening fast in spite of near or far sightedness or presybiopia.

By the way, welcome to the forum!

    Review:
The base is solidly constructed of steel, matte finish, and mounts perfectly without modification to the Mini-14. It provides and excellent, "accessories" platform on the Ranch Rifle for mounting an electronic sight--I have a Tasco Optima 2000 mounted and the complete unit is sleek, while allowing me the option of mounting a traditional scope in the rear rings. The added weight just opposite the operating slide acts somewhat like a stabilizer to improve groups. This thing does NOT "flex", and would be perfect for those with standard rifles wishing to have a scope or sight mounting point that doesn't interfere with, or require modification of the the rear sight.

    Review:
Just an update on the mount after testing at the range. It was ROCK SOLID from first shot to last! The only "problem" I encountered--which had nothing to do with the mount, was breaking the considerable torque on the 4, allen screws holding the gas block assembly in place, and the supplied allen wrench proved "too soft" for this. Luckily I had a hardend allen wrench of the proper size on hand and managed to get the screws out. With that accomplished, I followed some of the accuracy recommendations from other Mini-14 shooters and retorqued the screws to 16 inch-pounds--ensuring an even gap on either side of the gas block assembly/mount. I believe this contributed to my Mini-14 shooting better than expected out of the box. Possibly the added mass of the scope mount located opposite the gas block helps.

I just mounted a Tasco PDPII and it's great out to where things start to get even fuzzier.

Mine wears a Swift Premier 3X9X40. It is an extremely bright and clear scope with the best warranty in the business. I is moderately priced and I recommend them highly.

Why not just get a no-magification red-dot/green-dot scope?

    Ah, the Ruger Mini-14.
It shoots and uses readily available ammo....the only reason I've kept it.

I did scope mine though because, like others, I needed to be able to SEE where to move my 'pie-plate' groups. I went with a no-frills but durable 4X FIXED that was in a box-o-goodies I got at a garage sale. I used the mount/rings that came with the gun.
