Is 7.62x51 the same as the 308cal? If so will it work in the newer rifles? Like I say I am new at this but I also have a few more questions; What is 5.7x28 ammo? What does NATO stand for? I have some ammo with the head stamp of 7.62 HF?? it looks to have a sabot bullet in a .223?? could this be and what is it used for?

Yes. 7.62 is the same as .308 with the 7.62 X 51 being the military designation. Yes it works in newer rifles. Note that some of the military stuff is loaded hot.

5.7X28 is a rond chambered for the FN PS 90 and the FiveSeveN pistol series.

No idea on your last question, too early haven't had coffee yet.

762x51 is dimensionally the same as 308 winchester, but htey are loaded to different pressures. The 308 CETME is the same, only even lower pressure than the NATO or commercial.

    tadlwd -

Welcome to the GB forums and, apparently, the wide world of the shooting sports!

Is "7.62 HF" the entirety of the headstamp? Identifying the maker would be a big help in identifying your loads and I can find no "HF" in any of the references I have, nor on line.

Just wondering . . . are you sure the second letter is an "F" and not a faint "P" ? Are the cases somewhat silver colored?

If at all possible, please take good clear shots of the h/s and also of the cartridge (in profile), then either post them here or send to me via eMail.

"HF" headstamp is from Singapore, as is HD, H1, JA, and a whole host of others. It is OK ammo, some shows slightly elevated pressures, not the best by far, but should be safe.

Thanks, Rich! I must have a brain cramp this morning - I was thinking in terms of makers alone and didn't consider the Singapore date codes!
