Go To Gun in 308

It was pointed out to me by a friend of mine, that my 'higher power' guns are not in 'common' calibers.

I'm choosing to look for a couple of 'work-horse guns', bolt or auto, in 308 (that round seems to find varied uses). I've found some options, but I would like to add your thoughts.

Any and all feedback is appreciated.

If you are looking for a semi auto a M1A is very hard to beat. The one nice thing about the M1A right now is that there are current US GI mags avilable for a decent price. Good mags were running in the $50 range and can now be had for less then $25. There is one big downside to .308 right now and that is there is NO good inexpensive surplus ammo arround. Some other good semi auto guns in my order are the DPMS, Armalite, and Bushmaster in the AR series. Another good gun but kind of expensive is the DSA FAL's. If you are looking for a compact rifle with folding stock and 16-18" bbl the FAL is the way to go. If you are looking for a full size I would stick to the other guns. Since it sounds like you already have some bolt guns I will leave it up to you what you think is best.

I have had a standard FAL for a long time and while nice my new M1A is the ticket. Someday when I come up with some more funds the "tactical" FAL is on my list.

    UPDATES:
OK, so I forgot about the HK91 and G3 style rifles. They are very good too.

The Saigas are very cool too, but the mags are fairly expensive. I have one of the Saiga 12ga that was worked over by Tromix. Tromex makes some cool stuff.

Here is a pic of my M1A:

FN-FAL or HK 91. I chose the FAL for the adjustable gas system, and the fact that it was good enough for 90+ countries to issue it as a MBR. The fact that they can go 10k+ rounds without cleaning aside from the occasional dip in a pond is just a bonus.

Just about everyone makes a bolt in .308,Remington makes the 7400 and 750 in semi auto and Browning has the BAR.

Another rifle I'd look at is the Saiga.

I agree on considering the Saiga in .308. It is built on an AK-47 type action. Dependable, tough, and accurate. Price is reasonable, too. I love mine. If I had to fight a serious battle, I'd pick it or my FAL. (also .308)For sniping I'd go with my Tikka bolt action. Yes, it's a .308 as well. www.armsofamerica.com/firearms/saigarifles.html

I'd agree with Old Fool for a bolt rifle. For out-of-the-box accuracy and value for the dollar, the Savages are hard to beat.

Not a beautiful rifle, but handsome is as handsome does.

Savage Tactical in 308 is the best "bang for the book" out there..bar none. Howa 1500 is priced to compete for its' features. The Sako and Tika guns are great, but a good deal more money.

In a bolt gun, look at the CZ's. Great accuracy for not a lot of money.
