Have a whole pile (700-800 rounds) of Venezuelan 7.62x51 (green box headstamp CAVIM) that won't cycle my M-1A. I suspect it was for FAL's (not sure) But I'm not sure if I should go out and buy me a bolt gun to shoot it up with. Been wanting a Sav 110 in .308 anyway.

Question is Buy the bolt gun, or have it pulled apart and reloaded to US milspecs?

Where is all this Lake City 7.62x51 ammo coming from? It is obviously loaded for the military because it is coming linked in the MG packs with tracers. Can this much stuff be disappearing from the ranges etc. It is generally not that old and since we are still involved in a couple of shooting wars, surely the military is not surplusing it out yet???
    Any ideas??

Just traded for some 7.62 military ammo. Head stamp reads 7.62x51 and L O F N 1970. Just exactly what do I have here? Thanks

    codenamepaul,

I wouldn't expect that stuff to be really accurate in a bolt rifle either. I think the Savage would be a good way to go. It would be a cheaper way to break in your new barrel. And, it would be a fun way to shoot it up if tight accuracy isn't necessarily your goal.

The folks that slip in when nobody's watchin'! You surely ain't got no bona fides as a firearm freak, that's for sure.

Paul, you just go with your instinct there and buy yourself a bolt action.

Henry - thanks for ruining my chance at some cheap 308 to feed the FAL!

Gotta love that adjustable gas system.... although on mine it feeds 80s vintage cavim fine with the gas at 4 1/5 (about half open/half closed)

Paul......... I have shot hundreds of rounds of the Cavim from my M1A with no problems. It cycled just fine. Are you sure there is not a problem with the gun?

I too have shot a lot of CAVIM 7.62x51 through my M1A, as well as an FAL. What doesn't work right? No ejection? No extraction? Failure to feed from magazine? I also suspect there is something else wrong than the ammo.

I would agree (gun problem) if I hadn't shot dozens of rounds of various makes after I gave up on the CAVIM. Mainly LC92-96 headstamps WRA, FNM, some commercial stuff, and a buttload of reloads from a friend.

Just don't wanna go boom on the second shot, doesn't blow the bolt back far enough to eject or strip the next round. I would sell it local if I knew someone with an FAL

Besides-Henry's right. I really want to buy a bolt gun in .308 What better excuse?

I bought some of that CAVIM 7.62 sometime back in the late 1990's, and shot it in one of my Imbel/STG 58's. It didn't shoot particularly well. I didn't clean the rifle when I got done shooting. The next day the gas regulator turned a blue-green color, and was starting to get a little fuzzy looking. It took some work to get everything stripped and cleaned. That was the last time I ever used that stuff!

Not really accurate enough to satisfy a bolt gun.

Should be easy enough to sell, though with the dry up of Milsurp 308.

On reloading the Cavin, yes you can. However, it is very thick and is very hard on dies.
I would not reload it myself and I reload about any/everything.

Just an opinion which others In know share as well.
