    hello,
I have been lurking your forum for some time and finely got the courage to register and have a question on one of my Winchester rifles as to it's value.

I had purchased all my rifles between the ages of 15 and 19 then got married had children and the collection came to a halt and now at the age of 71 I am thinking maybe to sell them.

This is a Winchester 1895 30 us the ser# is very low if need be I can get it out and check it. I have attached a pic.

Can I shoot of the shelf 30.06 ammo through my 1895? Say remmington green box, or regular Federal, etc. It's a take down model and old.Serial number is 78xxx, on the barrel is .30 gov't.06.
Do you have any idea of value/ rarity. Thanks, for your help in advance, John. I'll try to post some pictures.

    Hello Bill,

The serial number is an important equation in determining the value, so yes, please dig it out.

I can see from the pictures that you do indeed have a very early "flat-side" Sporting rifle, and the serial number is undoubtedly something less that 6000. It also has a Lyman No. 21 receiver peep sight. It is very important to know if the Lyman receiver sight is factory installed, or an aftermarket add-on (the first will dramatically increase the value, while the latter will have the opposite affect). I highly recommend that you contact the Cody Firearms Museum (tell them Bert sent you), and purchase a factory letter for your rifle - http://www.bbhc.org/firearms/records.cfm

The factory letter will tell you the exact date that it was received in the warehouse, and the date it shipped (sold). It will also tell you if the Lyman receiver sight was factory installed. I need to know that information, and also see several close-up photos of your rifle to come up with a realistic value estimate. With all of that said, you potentially have a very valuable rifle[^].

    hi Bert & Perry,

Bert thank you for your information from all the posts I have read for some time now ( I truly respect your opinion ) This Rifle is one of the first I bought when I was a young man (55+ years ago)and the Lyman peep sight was on it when I bought it. The very first rifle was a Winchester 22 model 62A S.L.LR (that I bought new) for the sum of $43.00 and is just beautiful which I still have and some where I also have the receipt.

I will dig out the rifle (95) some time today and post the Ser.# and also take some close up pic. for you, I will also contact the Cody Firearms Museum and purchase a factory letter for my rifle, I see it can take (8) weeks or more to process a factory letter request.

Perry thank you for your complement quote:Nice looking Winchester

    Thanks Bill.

    Bill,

You are quite welcome, and thank you for the compliment. Connie & Jesi are nearly caught up at the CFM, and have mentioned to me that it is now taking about 3-4 weeks to get a factory letter out the door. I will look forward to seeing your next post.

Bill, some of the pics I'd like to see are the sides, all markings like the barrel address, tang, etc., buttplate, and sights.
    What's next?

    Hello Bill,

As I suspected, it is a very early production rifle.

I would like to see close-up pictures of both sides of the receiver, the address stamp on the barrel, the caliber stamp, the butt plate (side angle and head-on view), the muzzle face, and the front sight.

forgot to add... you can also send the pictures to me at Win1885@msn.com

    Hello Bert,

I sent the pictures to you that you suggested. I hope theyare ok but the address stamp did not turn out very well but you can see it fairly well and the caliber stamp you can see on the picture with the open breach.

Again I hope these pictures are ok.

I will post them here also as soon as I upload them to the server, most likely later this evening.

    Thanks Bill.

I am sure many of the members of this site (me included) would like to see the photos of this rifle. When you get a chance, could you post them here ??
