i was thinking about putting a red-dot scope on my kimber, but i dont want to drill and tap into it. is there any kind of railing that i can attach the scope to that bolts around the slide and not into it?

Hello I have been shooting red dot scopes on my match 1911 45 for many years there are 3 kinds of mounts #1 you drill and tap the slide this is what I use and good brands hold up well Ultra-dot and Gilmore but cheap ones millit, bsa, nc star, etc will not hold up with rhe slide moving back and forth the next is #2 this is a TUNNEL mount and is mounted on the frame and the slide runs between the two sides of the tunnel You have to drill and tap the frame it holds up well but makes it hard to rack the slide and clear a jam etc. And then #3 that will sound good to you at first but will quickly disapoint you this is a mount that takes the place of one of the grips looks easy but they break quickly and change the way the gun recoils feels like a big tuning folk [xx(][xx(][xx(]

Think I saw a mount many moons ago that fit under the left side grip panel... anything mounted to the slide will probably be beat to death relatively quickly...

I have one mounted on slide GILMORE BRAND with over 100,000 rounds thru it with no failures all the big military pistol teams use red dots 75 % slide mounted and they shoot 180+ rounds a day most use ULTRA DOTS the grip mount will NOT hold zero and will break and hit you between the eyes just a question of time.

if your not into competition shooting go with the grip mount. Don't go drilling holes into that high price gun. The grip mount will not hold up under heavy use but for sunday shooting it's great ( the heavier one). Had mine on for 10 years now (Sunday Shooting) but when I shot in competion I used the one u drill and the mount on the slide.
