I have one. I don't think they are reworks. I believe they were manufactured in India as .308s in the 1960s. It works ok, not as smooth as a .303. It holds 12 rounds. It looks like a No1, Mk3.

Well, technically, they are chambered for 7.62mm (NOT the same thing as .308).

They have a BEAUTIFUL bore that will shoot tight groups. Unfortunately, the rest of the gun is UGLY, & heavy to boot. And, covered in grease. And, the notch sights are difficult to use.

I bought one some years back. The history as I came to understand it was that they were the last and most modern Enfield produced. They were made to the same dimensions as the .303s but the materials used were upgraded to modern to be able to properly handle the higher pressures of the NATO 7.62x51 ammo. Mine looked to have a near new bore and was stocked in some Asian hardwood that I was never able to really identify. It had almost a purple tinge to the wood and it was heavy. After a year or so I cut it down into a tanker and re parkerized it. Along with a complete refinish on the stock set it looked and shot like new. It took a year or so for a buddy to make me an offer I couldn't refuse, but I did retain vistation rights. If you pick one up, with an excellent bore, you will probably be very happy with it. Good luck.........

I had 2 - one a full length the other a Navy Arms carbine made up to look like a No 5. I got rid of the #5, kept the full length one.

It's in excellent shape with not a scratch, bought it at a show so someone else cleaned all the crud off. Shoots OK groups and is alot of fun, reliable. What else can you say about a 12 shot bolt action rifle?

Almost forgot - the aftermarket mags I've bought are terrible. They're a pain to get to fit & don't feed well.

The caliber IS 7.62 NATO- close to .308 Winchester, but typically case has slightly smaller volume, and SAAMI spec is a bit lighter. Like the man said, they are not reworks- they were made as 7.62 from the start- different steel, and as I recall, bolt may be a tad different from the SMLE. Like me, somewhat crude, tad heavy and ugly, but shoots well. Bunch have just hit the surplus market for CHEEP.
