Antique black powder rifle

I have an old black powder rifle with the only marking on it being the number "56" on the barrel. The hammer, which is broken, is NOT on the outside like most I've seen, but on the inside under a removable plate. It is also missing the nipple.

I've been told it is probably a European gun. It appears to be about a 40 to 44 caliber bore. My questions are:

1. Any idea where I can find more information about what it might be?
2. Where might I be able to have a new hammer made?

I have detailed pictures I can email that might help. (As a newbie, I guess pictures can't be posted on the forum. - If they can, please let me know.)
