Antique black powder rifle

I have an old black powder rifle with the only marking on it being the number "56" on the barrel. The hammer, which is broken, is NOT on the outside like most I've seen, but on the inside under a removable plate. It is also missing the nipple.

I've been told it is probably a European gun. It appears to be about a 40 to 44 caliber bore. My questions are:

1. Any idea where I can find more information about what it might be?
2. Where might I be able to have a new hammer made?

I have an antique 40 cal (Hawken style) rifle from around the 1850's. The barrel has the name H. Ellis on it. I can not find any information on it. Does anyone know if it is a manufacturer or maybe a previous owner. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The pics on your website aren't really clear enough to get an idea of what you have, but with good pics, there is likely someone here that will have an idea.
