I was wondering if any one had any pics of the damage cause by the bolt in the reciever of the 742. As a reference of what to look for.

Thanks

A friend is wanting to sell me a remington model 742 in 6mm. I realize that parts for this rifle are hard to come by, if not impossible. I am curious to know what this rifle would be worth. It is well used but taken care of with 3-9x40 Redfield.

This model is supposed to be a take down type.
    Mine is giving me grief.
What size wrench is used and what type?
For the first time, I'm attempting to clean the barrel
from the right end, But that nut won't budge.

I bought a Rem 742 carbine, 30/06, from a pawn shop. The rifle appears to be in excellent condition. I took it to the range yesterday. It will not eject the spent casing from the chamber. The extractor is peeling off part of the case head. I shot it twice with different lots of factory ammo to make sure the first time wasn't ammo related. I also noticed the primer was nearly blown out of the pocket. This suggests to me there is too much pressure, but these were not reloads. Headspace problem? Anyone experienced similar problems with this model rifle? Is it worth correcting?

I am having a problem with this rifle that I have not Sean before with any of the Remington rifles I have dealt with .

The rifle was brought in for a general cleaning , looked like they used it as a fishing weight . Dirt + Rust , it cleaned up nice BUT.

They tell me later that some times after the first shot it would not fire the next round without manually cocking the rifle.

The sear and hammer look great but I am stumped on this one .Any ides would be great.

    Thanks

I recently bought a Rem. 742 thru gun brokers. It is a nice gun, butit seems everyone knew they were worthless ,but me.Three Rem.Artherized gun smiths told me so.One said "I have a pile of them out back that I threw away."Everyone I asked at a gun show said the same thing-NO PARTS AVAILAIBLE ,only junk.My question; Why do none of the gun value books say so?

My wife has a Remington 742 that is backing out primers. It has sentimental value to her.I've had several gunsmiths tell me they can't get parts or don't want to look at it. Don't know if it was bought new or not. We have only put a couple of hundred rounds through it. Last gunsmith did at least take it apart and clean it better than I did. Trotline weight? Wall hanger? Give it to one of the local gangs so it will blow up in their face?

Don't have any pix, but I'll try to explain what to look for.
Inside the top of the receiver, and the top of the bolt will have shiny lines running perpendicular to the bore, or small grooves running in line with the bore. In a well-worn receiver, there will be dents and scrapes inside the receiver, where metal has been gouged by movement of the bolt against the metal.
If it's really worn; there will be difficulty racking the bolt, and it may require a smack on the handle to close or open fully.
Also look closely at the rails that the bolt rides in; if they show signs of chattering or look shiny, you have the start of a problem.

notice the 'teeth' cut into the receiver, this is caused by the 'bolt lock' failing to engauge its slot in the bolt carrier (either dirty or parts failure).
