Savage 22

I bought an old Savage .22 this weekend that the dealer had tagged as a Mod. 23 but anything I can find makes me think it's a Mod. 19 NRA thats been modified.

It has the old looking stock with finger grooves in it,(not a sporter stock from the pix I've found), no peep sight but looks to be drilled for one. It looks like its had a dovetail filed into it since under the open sight, ( not original), it says Sav.....NRA. The dots are where I think the dovetail was later filed in.

Plus I havn't found an indication there were any guns marked NRA that weren't mod. 19's.

Its kinda beat up oviously, but still a good accurate old fun gun I can refinish without hurting any value.

Any expert info will be appreciated.

The model 22 was a "sporterized" model 19, with a Schnabel forened. It was introduced in 1922 and discontinued in 1923. It is quite rare. You undoubtedly have a model 19 NRA. It looks like the seller was fishing for a "collecter" when he claimed that it was a Model 22.

Thanks O.F.,,,,,I didn't realize there were so few of the 23.

I took it apart last nite to start the refinish process. It's actually in better shape than I first thought but still won't be hurt value-wise by doing so.
