7 mm Rem Express ????????

Some of you may recall that I posted a questions two or three months back concerning a Remington M700 marked 7mm Express that would not chamber a 280 round. Now that tax season is over, I finally got around to ascertaining the chambering for this rifle. It is 7x57 AI!!!!

I was very surprised when it showed the 40 degree shoulder. In addition, as I was shooting the 7x57s (forming brass), it appears that it wants to hit. As one who appreciates strange (or even weird) items, this one may have found a new home rather than simply being a trader.

7x57AI should be a great cartridge. I shoot the standard 7x57 mauser and think it packs a great punch for the case size. There is a large following for the improved 257roberts, which regularly waxes poetic about how well it compares with the 25-06. So I would expect that the 7x57AI should compare well with the 280Rem. The story on how that chambering occured with that marking on the barrel would be interesting to hear if you ever find it out. Personally I'd be sure to get the barrel re-marked to the correct cartridge to be on the safe side. Have fun with it.......
