wobbley scope mount on a mini-14

I have mounted a red dot style scope on my mini, using a weaver-style mount that attaches to a small plate, which slides into the left side of the receiver, covering a pin and spring that enable the shooter to lock back the bolt.

This plate is really loose; in fact, when I pull the stock off, the plate and the mechanism behind it fall out. (The original part was just as loose.)

So consequently, my scope mount is not entirely stable, and I have got to believe that has an adverse effect on aiming. Is this a common condition with mini-14s? Is there some way to make that plate fit better and thereby eliminate the wobbleing?

no its not common did you mount the new scope plate right?
I mounted a weaver tacl.mount on my mini and didn't have a problem
suggest you take it off and start over.

Just take it off and use the iron sights only. If you wanted acurracy of that type in .223 you should have bought an AR-15.

There are several means of tightening the fit of the mount. You can peen the edges of the receiver rails, or better yet peen the sides of the mount. You can also shim the mount. A good smith can tighten it up very quickly.

    Good luck

I tried that type of mount, B square, on my mini a couple of decades back and the mounting plate kept working loose or the threaded part stripped out. I replaced parts and tried several different combination, but I finally gave up. For even the couple of dozen shots that the system stayed tight the rifle just wasn't accurate enough to warrent the scope. I still have it, the mini is a great truck gun with iron sights, but I bought an AR for target shooting, amongst others. If you want a scoped mini, but the ranch style as the scope mounts are intregal to the receiver.
