difference between 710 30-06 and 0.308

I am in the market for a new rifle, I like the experts opinion on the differences between these 2 remington 710 rifles, beside the caliber of course. Is each dedicated to a certain sports i.e. one for deer hunting and the other for target shooting etc. I really appreciate any advice on this topic, thanks ...

Your lible to hear some negative remarks towards the 710. I'll refrain from my comment, today, simply because I have one on auction for sell (plug[;)]).

Anyways, both the 30-06 and the .308 are excellent hunting rounds, with only slight differences in their ballistics. The 06 is a long action round and the 308 is a short action round. To simply put it, the 308 is a shortened 30-06 case, both use the same bullet. Both rounds can easily be found anywhere that sells bullets. The 308 will have slightly less recoil than the 06, but I personally can't tell much difference between the two.

As far as target shooting goes, I'd guesss the 308 is used a little more than the 06 nowadays, but if that's what you intend to use the rifle for, then you need to be looking at a different rifle, my .02.

The gun choice is yours, the ammo discussion is open.
I would lean towards the 308 just for the shorter action.
You will get '06 performance up to the heaviest bullets.
For the heaviest bullets, the '06 takes the day, but for 99% of my use the 308 is fine.

Ammo and firearm companies are coming out with "new calibers" such as the HORNADY/RUGER 375 that is suppose to give near 375 h&h performance out of a shorter case for shorter action guns.
    A company marketing a "308 +P" / "308 supreme" / etc. would not surprize me. Something similar to a handloader's tweaked round.

    ENJOY !

I am a remington fan, and the 710 is one of the worse POS I have seen for sale in stores that do not noramlly sell crap
Ballistically very similar , both round fire a .308 cal bullet, tho 06 just in a longer case

The question of the quality of the gun aside,if you plan to hunt game that requires a heavy bullet and you don't reload, say a 220 grain soft point, your better off with the 30-06 larger bullet selection.

thanks for your feedback, I am surprised no one is fond of the remington 710, what do you recommend as a replacement in the same price range $350 to $450, thanks again

If you can stand the "Fugly-ness", go with a Savage. Otherwise look for a used Rem 700 or Win Mod 70. CZ makes a nice rifle also, but the stocks can be a little clunky (at least it's cheaper/easier to remove the excess wood than it is to add more wood).
The 710 is the KIA / Yugo of the rifle world, and for not much more you can get a whole lot more rifle. Rifles are not all that expensive, esp when you consider that they have a life expectancy of something like 100+ years.

look on this site, ruger 77, savage bolt actions, used winchester and remingtons 700's all are much much better and same price. look for used and you can probally save a bunch on scope and rings
both calibers are great for most hunting deer to elk. .308 can be had in a short action, vs the slightly longer action required for a 30-06. both started life and became popular as american service rifle calibers

It your price range, new rifle, best bang for the buck, Savage.

Tailgunner, What you mean fugly-ness. The Savage taint no fuglier than the 710.[;)][:D]
