all that is needed is to replace the barrel, but you might need to replace your stock if you purchase a barrel that is of a differant conture than stock. Here is a link for a good one:

Hello Shaw Barrel works make a barrel with factory contour 10 minute job works great.Edit for Loco 383 as the other poster stated only on bolt action the 77/22 is this a quick changeover just a barrel swap. Like mine a great deal.

After doing some resaerch and with the help aquired here it would appear the way to go is to buy a 77 in 17 M2 and then buy a 22 take off barrel to get both calibers.Shaw is by far the most economical.The others are close enough to the cost of a new gun to be prohibitive.Thanks for the help.I'll probably go with the Shaw;ST

The 77-22 is a bolt action rifle so all you have to do is swap barrels.
