Im thinking about a nice...time consuming project and Im pretty set on finishing a 1911 frame for a custom. Wondering if anyone has done this or if anyone knows a good source for a frame. Ive seen a few (cough, tannery shop) but I could buy a decent finished frame that price.

Any advice or help finding a frame would be awesome.

Thinking about a .22 top end,

I love projects However I can see no + but only - - - in trying to build a 60-80%1911 frame up to a functioning pistol The slide to frame fit on any are critical but even more so on a 22 conversion unit two things the spring on a straight blowback "22 UNIT" must be matched very closely to the recoil impulse of the load. The slide must move freely the height of the magazine must be exact to the bore line to get 100 % feeding and the slide to frame height has less room for error because the slide must strip a new round but not contact the magazine. I see NO advanage to a non registered frame. "YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY" IMHO it is hard enough to get all the parts to work 100% on any 1911 as many of the parts interact with each other and need to be fitted.

You can get a RIA frame here for about $100:

I reccomend you look into Caspian Arms if you want to build a really nice custom 1911, or if you are more on a budget an Essex Arms frame will work as well. Caspain is oen of the only companies making the old 1911 style frame(Not 1911A1) and they have a wide choice of materials for frames from aluminum, steel, damascus, and even titanium(last time I checked).

I've seen 80% frames offered, but I have never seen one successfully completed. The only guys I know skilled enough to do it will not waste their valuable time doing so.

If anyone can post a photo of a "completed" 80% frame 1911 project, PLEASE let us see it.
