30-40 Krag

Hello Gentlemen,
I have a question about the 30-40 Krag. I have had the bug for a while to collect alot of our older generations guns. I have amassed so far a trapdoor 45-70, 1903, m1 garand, tommy gun, as well as some of the other newer military rifles. I have come across a guy selling a 30-40 Krag for $400. Now I have not seen it yet in person. I have seen a one pic online. But I was looking for your expert opinion on the rifle. I do know that the furniture looks to be original. I have talked to the owner and he states that it is original as well but missing the "foregrip" wood. He has also stated it to be a carbine and has sporterized front and back sights. I plan on looking at it this sunday but just figured I would ask ya'lls opinion as well.
Thanks

I'm looking a a (sporterized) 30-40 KRAG. The bore looks clean and in good shape. It is in useable condition. Is there anything I should look for before buying this rifle.

Assuming you mean the US model 1898 Springfield, they are accurate, and reliable enough that they are still being shot on a regular basis after being over 100 years old.

Wasn't there an old saying in the US military: "Civilize 'em with a Krag!"

Just don't ever take one to a public shooting range. There will always be some son of a Republican who will offer you more than you can resist. I'm on my third one now & I doubt that I will ever be able to find any more cheap ones to replace it.
I got enough for the first one that the second was free & now I've paid for the reloading dies, brass, bullets & all the shooting I have done with all three of them plus the third rifle with money left over. Now I just have to hope someone doesn't offer me too much for this one.

The 30-40 Krag is still in fairly widespread use for deer and bear hunting here in northern Maine. The majority have been sporterized and had the barrel cut. The biggest problem I've seen with them is lack of cleaning the bore back when corosive priming was the normal and the bores on a lot of them leave a lot to be desired. But most of them will still shoot accuratly enough to make a good hunting arm.

So far as a milsurp bolt gun, there's not too many better pieces to be had so far as workmanship and accuracy. While the .30-40 cartridge isn't the ballistic equal of the .30-06 (or, even, the .308 WCF), it's perfectly adequate for the largest of whitetails out to 200 yds.

Also should have been noted that it has an incredibly smooth action for a military rifle, regardless of age.

It only has one locking lug,so don't try to make a magnum out of it.Enjoy it for what it is.Pieces of metal made into a form of art.
