I was thinking about a 45 auto, primarily for home defense. I plan on practicing occasionally, but would want it mainly for home defense. I know there are a bunch to choose from and I am mainly a long gun person, so I ask you guys with experience with the 45 as what is an affordable and quality 45 auto? Thanks.

*-R-Done will be along shortly to praise the Rock Island's [:)]

They seem to be a fairly decent low-end .45

Bersa makes a decent 45acp compact as well.

If money was the only object I would say that you sould look at the EAA Witness, but like you said, there are many great .45's on the market today. Do your self a big favor and go to a shop with a budget in mind and try out the fit on several of the .45's and see what fits you the best. I love the Witness and it fits me very well, but your hand may perfer a Glock 21, a 1911 or a XD-45. Just remember, the gun that fits you best is the gun that is the best fit for you.

There are also alot of used S&W 4506 on the market. Those are really nice used guns.

If you can find one an Norinco are good and if you want they are a good starting point for customizing. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=72403700 is around $400

Like he said: I recomend the Rock Islands. I own plenty of them and have never had a single problem. They are great .45's that I personally would put right up there with Colt, Kimber, and Springfield as far as reliability. I use them as personal carry guns all the time.

Basic 5" GI will start around $345 and the newest model being the FS Match (I don't have one of those yet so I have no picture of one) will go around $550 with the other models being in between.

You can also look at this site:
    http://forum.m1911.org/forumdisplay.php?f=17

That is a Rock Island forum were the president of the company, National rep, sales and service rep, and a couple who work at the factory regularly post. These people are allways willing to answer any questions either on the forum, by personal email, or by phone (I personally have talked with Ivan the National Rep on the phone a few times. So I know first hand that you can get him on the phone without a problem).

This is a company that will definatly take care of thier customers and builds a quality product!

If you want it for home defense and are not planning on practicing a lot get a used Sig P220. IMHO, the 1911 platform needs to be practiced and some can be picky about ammo. The Sig is just aim and pull the trigger and 100% reliable.

One more RIA owner who is very happy...

Although if I hadn't gotten the Rock, it would've been a EAA Witness in 45 (and a 22 conversion kit!)
